Where is this stat supported? A quick Google didn't turn up much other than what could easily be mostly BS.

From one source talking with Gen. John Adams:

So if you survive the first bout with the virus you'll just get infected again- which means you can't build immunity and there won't be an effective vaccine. This means it won't stop until there is no one left to infect which was my original thought on why this is so dangerous. You would need to be offgrid and isolated long enough so that the infected die off.

Jeez, looks like I missed some drama yesterday.

At this point, I have to agree that the "it's just the flu, bro" is a pretty misguided mindset. Maybe the virus isn't a world-ending event and isn't as lethal as other bugs floating around, maybe it's the next Black Death. Either way, governments are tripping over themselves trying to handle the situation and still failing miserably. That alone gives me cause to take it seriously. China's actions alone give credence to this being an escape/laked bioweapon.

So the quick and dirty prep for anyone just cruising by the thread looks like what?

1. Water - I hear 1 gal/person/day but that seems unrealistic. How much does a household actually need?

If you are planning for a grid down situation you will also need water for cooking/cleaning/toilet flushing.

2. Food - Pretty easy really. Peanut butter, canned tuna, canned beans, canned veggies, frozen meat, etc.

Go light on frozen and add in crackers, canned meals like chili, stews etc. think variety eating the same few foods for months on end gets old fast. Plus you need a way to heat food in case power goes off. Don't forget tea and coffee if you are a user.

3. Meds - Couple months of Rx's, otherwise standard first aid stuff. What about cold/flu specific meds?

Of course masks, gloves and hand sanitizer are givens, but even more important is situational awareness, in an infectious environment you must not touch your face and that is next to impossible not to do.

4. Toiletries - Lots of TP, antibacterial soap, etc. What about alcohol (what type specifically)?

Hand wipes, antibacterial spray (Lysol etc.), trash bags, bleach, 5 gallon buckets think having to store or decontaminate shoes, clothing items, equipment etc. If it gets bad anything you acquire from outside your safe zone will have to be disinfected especially the shoes and clothing you are wearing if you venture out.

5. Cash - Couple thousand in twenties just in case?

Not just 20's in an infectious environment the last thing you want to do is get change back, round off to nearest dollar and pay that.

Was a bit more nuanced then that, but let's not bother rehashing it. If the Chinese response is the indicator for some it's far more dangerous than we know, and it's much more virulent than we are being told, then by all means prep for it as if it's an escaped bio weapon. Better safe than sorry. I don't think they will prevent it from pandemic status anyway. For myself, I have what I need I believe.

While it really wouldn’t surprise me to be true, I do have to wonder about the source of a lot of this. Warren and Romney on the letter, WAPO and Chuck Schumer, etc. Most of us would probably normally discount just about anything these people say given any other situation.

Given what we are able to find, do you think the government honestly knows how bad this is? That they are not really saying anything because they don't want people to panic? I can see that. It also makes sense why the Chinese were just locking people in their buildings because they know if one person is infected on the same public sewer line or air duct system of an apartment building- then everyone inside already has it. It's essentially airborne AIDS with a side of immune repressing pneumonia that stays in your system indefinitely so as of now or the foreseeable future- there really is no way to fight this. This has the potential to change mankind forever unless we take extreme measures right now. Imagine if this gets into other mammal species including our livestock. I can't imagine what the future looks like.
