Patriotism means to stand by the country. It does not mean to stand by the President... - Theodore Roosevelt, Lincoln and Free Speech, Metropolitan Magazine, Volume 47, Number 6, May 1918.
Every Communist must grasp the truth. Political power grows out of the barrel of a gun. Our principle is that the Party commands the gun, and the gun must never be allowed to command the Party Mao Zedong, 6 November, 1938 - speech to the Communist Patry of China's sixth Central Committee
With today's surveillance capabilities (i.e. satellites and such) and stand-off weapons I would wager that the answer is a resounding no, at least as far as having to kiss the ass of whoever controls it.
Think about it: is the Panama Canal as vital to who controls it as it once was? The above-mentioned capabilities would tend to negate any issues with what country or entity controls it. Now sabotaging the locks or something similar to stop trans-oceanic travel could indeed be an issue, so there's that. But with Turkey and the Bosphorus Strait, other than the Russians who gives a shit?

Is it too late to invite Russia to join NATO?
If ever there was a country we really, really, really needed to get on the same page with...it's Russia.
After 9-11 Russia reached out to Bush (43) to offer assistance and got called out on "human rights abuses" in Chechnya.
In 2013 Russian intelligence agencies gave Obama specific warnings about the Boston bombers in advance of the attack. In 2016 Obama locked down diplomatic compounds and expanded sanctions against Russia.
Now I'm not saying Putin is a nice guy, I'm not saying Russia isn't capable of shit, even recently they more or less occupied Ukraine. But we have lots and lots of common ground and waste time and money trying to step on each others dicks.
We need to come to an agreement of who is in control of what and without having a war to figure it out. Then let them handle their business is their sector and we handle ours in our sector. If I was President I'd invite them back to Afghanistan for "talks."
It's hard to be a ACLU hating, philosophically Libertarian, socially liberal, fiscally conservative, scientifically grounded, agnostic, porn admiring gun owner who believes in self determination.
Chuck, we miss ya man.

Here is the reason for the Russians hitting a Turkish convoy:
Source provides a very detailed description of events (not 100% sure if it's accurate though): https://www.al-monitor.com/pulse/ori...sh-troops.htmlRussian sources, contacted by Al-Monitor, claim that more than 15 MANPADS attacks, carried out directly by Turkish troops, targeted Russian and Syrian jets conducting air raids in southern Idlib after 1 p.m. that day. Some Russian aircraft allegedly suffered damage as they maneuvered to escape the fire. As the attacks on the planes and the Khmeimim base reached an intensity deemed intolerable, the Turkish convoy was hit at 5 p.m.
In a nutshell: two Syrian Su-22 scattered the convoy of about 400 Turkish troops supporting jihadist factions. Afterwards two Russian Su-34 hit a few buildings where troops were hiding.
Turkish retaliatory strikes. Not sure what targeting equipment the Turks are using, but some of the clearest video I've seen from this conflict:

Why can't Turkey stop invading other countries? And if not, why can't we kick them out of NATO? Turkey is a cold war vestige now, the Russians have leap froged them and are in Syria. Turkey serves no purpose and is a liability.
Turkey threatens to flood Europe with refugees.
Looks like they took down a couple planes...
