Taffy 3's actions are the embodiment of "YOLO." They're going to die, they don't have a chance, but you know what? They might take a few of them down with 'em, so you might as well give it a go. And they did.

I mentioned his videos in my last post, but for anyone interested and has 42 minutes to hear a snarky, dry-witted Brit talk about the battle, watch this. You won't regret it.

I keep wondering when someone is going to produce a current film about the Battle of Wake Island.

I seem to recall a quote from a sailor on one of the destroyers at Samar: "It won't be long now, boys. We're suckin' them into 40mm range"

I thought the same thing looking at the Midway trailers, but the movie was pretty good.

There are soo many 20th century naval engagements / incidents that deserve proper movies:

    Hunt for the Bismarck

Battle of Leyte Gulf / Samar / Surigao Straight

    Jutland

2nd Russian Pacific Squadron / Tsushima (look on YouTube)

    River Platte

    Solomon’s / Guadalcanal
Solomon’s was brutal. Cruiser and BB surface action at close ranges. Us figuring out that Japs could actually see at night through squinty eyes ;0.

Going up against a battleship in a destroyer and not immediately loosing is great; doing it multiple times before going down is amazing.

The whole Philippines/Leyte Gulf naval battles are epic. I don’t think it gets told very much because it is so freaking complex.

The Battle of the Bismarck Sea would make a good flick, especially with B-25's and A-20's strafing and skip-bombing Japanese ships to the bottom. The strafing of Japanese survivors in the water might be objectionable. though.

They made a B&W about the Bismark.

Just watched the trailer for Greyhound in this thread. It actually looks good, and has a different feel to it visually than Midway. For me the visuals in Midway looked too computer generated - almost cartoonish. This new Tom Hanks film visually looks and feels more ominous. Despite Tom Hanks' politics, I will be spending money to see this one.

It would be nice to take my 97 year old father in law to see this one. He was on a transport ship in 1942 from New York to England, and then another ship from England to North Africa. He described the ship from the second leg of the trip to North Africa as something you'd see hauling bananas out of some 3rd World Country. He was with the 2nd Battalion, 16th Infantry Regt, 1st Infantry Division.

That video was pretty good, those guys had gonads the size of basketballs. I liked the part about the Destroyer escort taking on a Cruiser, they fired all their AP shells, then all the HE shells, then all the AA shells then blasted them with the Starshells and Flares which actually turned out to be quite effective starting fires. Another interesting factoid was that the Japanese thinking they were attacking bigger heavier armored ships were shooting AP rounds that were going right through the lighter armored DD, DE's and escort carriers without exploding. The DE mentioned above was finally sunk once the Cruiser caught on and started using HE shells.
