Should be doable. I remember running like 22.4 gr many years back and getting great velocities with THAT lot of powder. Never revisited it. But I know my current lot wouldn't do that much powder without really popping primers.

Why can’t they keep them similar?

I tried 22.0 of H322 and only got an average of 2,506. Zero signs of pressure. My previous load was 21.6, for an average of 2,485. I thought the increase would be reflected in the last load, but obviously it barely budged.

    22.8 next?

    Pat,

You have a 16" barrel & mine was 18", so add 60 FPS to your velocity to account for barrel length alone.. Try 22.3 and 22.6 next.

What brass, primer, and COAL are you using?

    1x fired PPU 5.56 brass (ex-M193 cases)
    Wolf SRM
    2.240"
    Light crimp.

I'm trickling each one individually and running them through the same chrono, shot from about 10' away.

OK I going to speculate here: Your using a 2" shorter barrel; 0.1 grains less than my load; and a cooler primer ( Markm just tested a CCI41 vs a Wolf SRM and the Wolf SRM yielded 86 FPS less velocity with a 69 grain RMR and H322). I used CCI 450 in my load.

So if we take a stab (scientific wild ass guess) at adding up the unknown differences: Lets say +60 FPS for 2" of barrel; + 10 FPS for 0.1 grains of H322; and + 50 FPS for a cooler primer. That's 120 FPS potentially missing from your measured 2506.

Your guess is probably better than mine.

I'd heard that 21.6 - 21.8 gr. of H322 was sort of a sweet spot with 77gr. Nosler CCs. I'm more or less trying to clone Mk.262, and am willing to lose a bit in accuracy in favor of maximizing terminal ballistics with this bullet. The increase from 21.6 to 22.0 showed no apparent pressure indicators, including swipes, but no appreciable gain in velocity, either.

I don't know. I just don't know very much about how powder is made.

I used to think the lot change concern for hand loading was over blown. But I've had several first hand experiences with it. I seemed like every new lot of Varget got slower for us for a while.

It's like trying to make salsa taste the same everytime you make it. There are several variables that are very difficult to control and the cost of the end product would be greater if they tried to improve the batch quality.

2.240" is really short. I run mine closer to 2.260 which leaves a little more room for powder and eases the pressure a little bit. I run a 20 round ASC mag which leaves a little extra room, closer to 2.300 OAL.
