Jarhead is the most realistic war movie I've ever watched. It mirrors my time, frustration, and buddies from when I was in the Corps. To those who never served in the Marine Corps, the movie likely doesn't make much sense. To those who served in the Corps, but got to do what they were trained to do, likewise.

    War movies I enjoy:
    Fury
    Jarhead
    Platoon
    We Were Soldiers
    Black Hawk Down
    Saving Private Ryan
    Patton
    Inglorious Basterds

And while not movies, these two are far greater than any war movie:
    The Pacific
    Band of Brothers

So I was just a POG, and as much as I always hated it, I was really good at what I did and appreciated the opportunity. Having said that Jarhead is a decent movie, but (and I'm going to be that guy) the book was better. The Green Wienie is as nasty one, and everyone gets some at some point, but honestly, I think Generation Kill does the best job of portraying Marines, although, and this always bothered me about War movies, but a lot of my officers where exemplary guys. Seriously amazing people some of which I would have grabbed my rifle and followed into hell... as a POG. But some were just as in the movies, horrible people who thought that this was a stepping stone into politics or a law firm in which they got paid to do next to nothing.

So, not to switch subjects of the thread, Brandon Webb I trust as far as I can throw him, and I would also like to give an honorable mention to Hogan's Heroes. Hogan, gave my me probably my first insight into WW2 and let my grandfather and his brothers, tell me all sorts of things after they had a few Schlitz in them.

Dr. Carter G. Woodson, “History shows that it does not matter who is in power or what revolutionary forces take over the government, those who have not learned to do for themselves and have to depend solely on others never obtain any more rights or privileges in the end than they had in the beginning.”

Jeeze, forgot to mention Generation Kill.

It is for every Marine what FMJ was supposed to be. And it absolutely kicked the shit out of Jarhead which I tried to like, but I hate Jake whateverthehellhisnameisandIdon'tcare.

Generation Kill dramatically demonstrates everything that is right and wrong about the Marines and how they do things.
It's hard to be a ACLU hating, philosophically Libertarian, socially liberal, fiscally conservative, scientifically grounded, agnostic, porn admiring gun owner who believes in self determination.

    Chuck, we miss ya man.

I suppose I totally forgot FMJ and Generation Kill. Absolutely loved and lived off of both.

The book is WAY better. And I was just a POG too, but the main character's frustrations with being blue balled in war were my complaints in throughout my enlistment as well, especially being a POG far behind the lines.

I liked "Fury" because it portrays a side of WWII you don't typically see in WWII movies, but what I imagine a lot of guys went through - not the final battle, but guys just trying to make it through and having to deal with a constant stream of replacements. You see it fleshed out a little more in "Band of Brothers", which, if you've read the book, Ambrose devotes a lot of space to the subject.

Both movies are so accurate about life in the Corps, in totally different ways. Every time I miss being in, I watch Generation Kill again. It helps me come to my senses.

I'll nominate Dunkirk. I watched it in theaters and it captured an emotion I haven't felt in any other movie.

In a lot of movies/shows guys talk about how they know they're gonna die it's just a matter of when. That was unspoken in Dunkirk but it was still there. You got all these dudes lined up, freezing cold, waiting to get on a ship while being straffed by Stukas. It also gives a unique multiple perspective of everyone involved.

As for Ryan, I don't really care for it. Sure the opening scene is absolutely undoubtedly amazing but the rest of it is a little far fetched. It's like the D-Day version of Enemy at the Gate. [Flame suit on]

Fury was good. They should have just made it the Audie Murphy story instead if basing it on it. It was the first movie to make me realize how terrifying MG42s to a Sherman were.i also had the impression that small arms can't harm tanks, so why care if an MG opens up on you? Also really the first movie to make me see how much it would suck to be in a tank crew.

We need Michael Mann to direct an Eastern front flick from the perspective of the Soviets while not propagandizing the Soviet Union.

Personally, I think that a film that takes a good look at the Ostfront from the view of the German Soldier (that in no way glorifies Nazism or apologizes for it) in the manner of Das Boot would be good. The bones of over 3 million German soldiers still litter the battle fields of the Soviet Union.
