Yeah, that ammo is unflattering, as are the circumstances. I think it was the same stuff Recoil used testing Sandman endcaps for flash. Don’t remember for sure. Anyway, I took the point of using a single, unflattering, ammo as a method of maintaining consistency and bringing out the differences in devices. I think the Covert Comp would probably do just fine for most users, especially if they are unlikely to shoot berm blasting ammo in low light, or they have 16” guns. I do shoot low light somewhat frequently, and used to do so weekly or more, so I tend to pay attention to the differences in flash suppression.
The 10.75” KAC URX4 works great on my 12.3” upper. My 12.5” Grendel upper has a SLR 11.7” upper. It is almost too close for comfort, hence the linear comp taper mount. I highly recommend the URX4, and have 4 weapons built around them.
DocSherm, who has not been posting here much lately, has a few 12.5” guns, and he uses the Larue 11” rails. The pics he has posted show a good barrel to handguard length relationship. I would strongly consider a Larue LAT as an alternative to the URX4.
One of the downsides of the footlong barrels is that there are fewer handguard choices for them. 11-11.5” handguards are optimal. Once you get the formula right, they are fracking awesome.

I had the same issue with a 10.5 build, I used a 10 inch hand guard and used a YHM flash hider.

I looked at those too. Do you have a pic?
You can get a 3.5" (shorty) XM177 flash hider from these guys https://retrorifles.com/moderator-fl...ndo-1963-1974/ . But the hider is modeled off the A1 and is slotted all the way around. Or you could contact this elderly couple up in Michigan (cool peeps) and "he" could likely make you one if you give him the length you're look for. Make sure and tell him you want the wrench flats. Sometimes they don't answer their hard line. The pic shows their cell #. https://northerngunparts.com/
If you order from them, the wife might ask if it's ok to ship the flash hider in a padded envelope because it's approx 1/2 the shipping cost. Love it.
