Both of your ideas would be illegal, and CB radio idea wouldn't work at all.

Why do you care? The person probably hears shots and wants to see what is going on. At 300+ feet high, you would look like an ant in the frame, so to see anything in detail, it would have to be very close to you, and they don't have a zoom lens. Your guns and your face would be totally unrecognizable. From your description, it sounds like a DJI Phantom. The newer models have a 5 mile range in ideal conditions. If someone shoots one down while they are in view of the camera, it can be recorded on the remote controller in the operators hands even if you recover the drone and SIM card. They also now have GPS locators built in, so don't drive away with it.

They aren't hurting anything and they can't see much from that altitude. They might not even be looking at you. They might be over your range and looking at something over the next hill. Why is this so bothersome? You should really find someone that has one and let them put it up for you so you can see what I'm talking about. I think that might allay some of the fears expressed in this thread.

I’ve got some experience with hobby grade UAVs before the FAA started regulating them. Shorter range setups typically use 2.4ghz for control and something like 5.8ghz for video. If the one you saw was more than a mile from the operator and not one of those off the shelf DJI units, they probably use UHF ~460mhz for control any anything from 900mhz to 2.4 for their video link.

The above poster was correct in that anything legal nowadays needs to be LOS unless they’re a licensed commercial operator.

Could you tell how big this thing was?

If it's flying very fast it's probably not something like Mavic. If it's a FPV drone then almost without doubt the pilot is recording the flight in his goggles. Most FPV flyers want to film interesting things so if it's not flying down ridge lines and mountain slopes or doing something acrobatic or filming something that has artistic or cinematic content it's probably not your typical FPV pilot.

"the same white drone" sounds like maybe a DJI Phantom. I would not risk shooting it down. Could someone be mapping the region?

Most people in the drone community are not trying to do something shady. 100-150 yards high is also the ceiling for drones are 400ft above ground. So that sounds like they are trying to stay away from anyone on the ground, respect privacy, and fly within FAA laws.

If you shoot it down, they will know exactly where it went down. So it's very likely you will end up having a conversation with someone about it because they are going to try to find it and get it back. It's not worth it.

To put things in perspective... to the drone community, shooting down a drone is pretty much the same as Beto ORourke taking everyone's guns. It's a mindset everyone needs to distance themselves from.

I am fine with them flying around, but the jack holes I get are the ones that hover just out of $60 combo reel casting distance. Little do they know my rigs would reach them, just not worth the fight. With your statement that is like a gun community fudd walking around low ready with his AR. The drone community should do a better job. I couldn’t think of anything more satisfying than jamming one of these jerks and watch it slow land into a lake, just like the low ready fudd getting a dose of non-lethal

Yeah I’d be bait casting for drones around me that are low enough if I was fishing. I would find it amusing, so long as I could say it was an accident.

I think most people here are privacy people.

Also I think they can be annoying. One of the things I was thrilled to leave behind was the 2am helo hover as police helicopters hovered in place over a traffic accident a few blocks from my house or flew a perimeter of several blocks looking for a bad guy. And this was cops looking for criminals. So I'd have a much lower tolerance of anything regularly hovering over my house or back yard.

As with everything else, there are responsible owners and there are dickfaces who can't stop pushing it too far. The responsible owners will by definition never be a true annoyance. I don't get jacked up if a motorcycle drives by the house and I'm not gonna get jacked up if a drone flies over the house, but circling is another matter and just as I don't want to listen to anyone's loud ass kiddie cycle take laps around my block I don't want to be bothered by any other noisy toy from "look at me...I'm an inconsiderate jackass" type either.

I assume drones are expensive and people put a lot of effort into setting them up just right. So I would think people wouldn't go through all that to carelessly fly them over say...a skeet range. I know if I had a drone I wouldn't do that. I might be inclined to do a beach flyover to check out the hotties, but I know if I go into hover of some guys girl or daughter who is sporting a hot pink thong, my drone is going to become pretty unpopular and somebody might get upset enough to figure out a way to take it down.

So time and place and basic courtesy I think should apply. That said, some of the drone footage I've seen in the last 10 years is stunning. It really has opened up a new way to see the world and if I ever had the time and money to get into it, looks like a lot of fun.

Yep. And we're super lucky to be able to shoot on restricted/private land where not dickheads are driving in front of our targets, etc.

It's irritating when you think you're detached from the world's stupid asses, and then here comes some ass wipe's drone.

You would only get in trouble for shooting it down if you got caught. Set up your hidey hole somewhere else on the property. If they can’t see you, they can’t prove you shot it down, and I doubt any of the heavy duty rounds you shoot would stick in a plastic drone.
