So if a bullet is likely to surpass 18-20 inches in ballistics gelatin that's when to use JHP's. Otherwise use flat-nose or ball.
For .380, .38 Special from a short barrel, and less powerfull ammo flat or round nose ammo is what I load.
I disagree the main purpose in my opinion is to increase wounding potential with JHP's. That is also the reason people are buying them.
