I always go with the "flying below the radar" mentality when dealing with this stuff, and have been for over four decades. It is the in your face dudes, the weekend commandos, that generally cause problems. The letter writers, the biggest enemy amongst us.

There doesn't have to be an increase in crime for those that desire to take away your 2nd Amendment rights. My unsolicited advice is don't poke the bear. Keep your doc's squared away, and don't allow the modularity of the AR15 and internet talk forums cause you to do something that could be illegal.

You cannot be arrested for having an short barreled rifle if the rifle you have does not have a short barrel.

Not only can you be arrested, but you can be convicted too. So when you play the SBR game make sure you know the definition, and when you start swapping parts, make sure you meet BOTH conditions - BBL length and OAL.

8)The term “short-barreled rifle” means a rifle having one or more barrels less than sixteen inches in length and any weapon made from a rifle (whether by alteration, modification, or otherwise) if such weapon, as modified, has an overall length of less than twenty-six inches.
