studies that show those who are obese tend to have vaccine failure (another easy to google) so even when this vaccine is out it won't cure metabolic health and yeah it will work for % but many with health issues can change this outcome

While this is hardly a scientific statement, there seems (at times) to be no rhyme or reason to COVID mortality. It seems if COVID has your number you're fvcked no matter what they do.

Case in point: a 78yo home oxygen patient of mine was recently released from another hospital with COVID. Now this dude is on 3L at rest and a 10L Pendant (a LOT of oxygen for you lay folks) with exertion. That was his script before having COVID. Now you would think, with all the talk of co-morbidities, that he'd be fvcked. Well he's still kickin' believe it or not.

Other times you see a guy in his 50's who they hit with the kitchen sink and he nonetheless slowly declines and ends up dying. Maybe he had diabetes or high BP, maybe not. Certainly nowhere near as compromised as the first guy I mentioned.

Like I've heard some combat vets say "If the bullet has your name on it there isn't anything you can do about it".

If the mortality rate has dropped I'll wager it is only because of more widespread testing and we know more people have it than 6 or 8 months ago. That would make the mortality rate appear to decline.

One thing I know is that if you end up needing intubated (like needing a ventilator) due to COVID you are essentially screwed. That ET tube is like the "Kiss of Death".

I think so. Earlier in the outbreak testing was limited and prioritized depending on symptoms. Around here you would call a Covid hotline. Those with mild symptoms were told to stay home and isolate. If symptoms significantly worsened you would call back and get a referral for a test. I'd guess that a lot of folks were never tested until they got so sick they were admitted to the hospital. All that eventually morphed into public advertisements for free drive-thru testing, no referral, no appointment, no symptoms... just drive over to your local drive-thru testing site for a free test. So... there was initially a peak in death rates then a steady decline as testing became more widespread including more asymptomatic cases. I'm assuming this is what Trump is referring to when he says death rates have fallen 80%. (graph below)

As for this being a surprise, it is commonly understood in the technical audience that COVID was circulating in late 2019. Remember the National Security Council reportedly advised DJT to take action by January 2, if not in December.
