Thread: Surefire G2 or 6P?

    Surefire G2 or 6P?

I will purchase one of these for rail mounting. An aftermarket LED will be added to increase the range. Is there any reason to go for the 6P at essentially twice the price of the G2?

    Thanks!

If you plan on putting a powerful led drop in bulb in the surefire, then I think you should look at the 6p because the aluminum head is a much better heat sink than the nitrolon body.

Depends on which aftermarket unit. An aluminum bezel is optimal for all. The Malkoff is fine in the G2s. The others may or may not be.

I was under the impression that all the newer G2LEDs had aluminum heads now.

Both the two I've purchased in the last 6 months or so came with an aluminum head.

    They do.

If you're mounting it up forward I'd go with the G2L.

I was debating the same thing. I opted to get the 6P LED because of the aluminum body. After getting the Surefire mounted up to my LMT I sort of like the look of the G2 better. It has a matte finish rather than the shiny black like the 6P. Both of the lights have the same output. Unless you have an affinity towards an all metal flashlight, get the cheapest.

Nothing wrong with a G2L since the aluminum head heat sinks just fine.

Lighter and possibly more shock resistance (not that you need it with a LED). The only other factor is if you wanna put a clicky or other tailcap then it won't match up so pretty.

Also, I have had issues with various LED drop ins (not Malkoff or SF!) that don't sit right with the much reduced G2 negative contact innards. I have had to bend/prod them into working correctly, not super comforting...

You are actually (partially) incorrect. The best incan will still outthrow the best LEDs, but we aren't talking about the best incans here. Many LEDs will put out more lumens in the first place than older incan modules like the standard P60 in Surefires, the Malkoff especially, as it uses a focusing optic instead of a standard reflector.
