A snap shot into tensions in pre State Israel

    https://www.jpost.com/judaism/jewish...ate-era-626088

Most people don't know how brutal the fighting had become between the English security services in pre state Israel and the Jewish population. A lot of people know about the bombing of the King David Hotel, but not the events surrounding it.

I guess I know the stories, so no surprises for me in the story arc.

That said, the best broken record is British Labor Party, which is still anti Israel 75 years later.
And Bernard Montgomery was a genuine piece of shit. If he was the best field general the UK could seem to muster (at least in Europe), that is a huge indictment of how rotten their entire system was by the start of the Second World War.
As for Farran, a product of that same rotten system.
Moral corruption took the UK from the pinnacle of the Empire under Queen Victoria to a footnote laughing stock under her grandsons.

And yet the SAS was born during that time. Monty was better than Chamberlain but not as good as Churchill. But we also had our MacArthurs and Pattons, at least Patton carried his weight even if he did step on his own dick from time to time.

    Yoni,

Thanks for the history. I knew a little about the King David Hotel but not any of the back story.

I'd argue that most of his predecessors were actually more talented and likely better people than Monty. Wavell, for instance, was incredibly talented and got the boot because he didn't work particularly well with Churchill. A lot of his subordinates were also good, except for his sycophants and patsies like Crerar. Monty just had the good fortune of taking over as the tide was turning, and could get the credit for it.

Churchill was ready to throw east Europe under the bus in order to preserve its' empire, which also included parts of the eastern Mediterranean. A free and independent Israel stood in the way.

Churchill was actually relatively pro-Israel. He pushed for years to get the Jewish Brigade stood up, and it helped form the core of the IDF. By the time tensions really heated up in Mandate Palestine, he was gone, and Attlee's Labour Party was running things.
