Colt AR-15 conversion kit in .22 lr

    Hi

Is anyone familiar with the Colt AR-15 conversion kit in .22 lr ? Does it work, is it reliable, can I use it in an M16A1 in full auto ? Any drawbacks ? Value ?

    TIA

I have one new in package as part of my Colt collection but have not used one. I'm curious what experience other site members have had with them.

My HBar came with one. Use it from time to time in a few Colts, especially if shooting suppressed.

Haven't dropped it in a full auto but runs like a charm in every semi I have.

I have the military version and it runs fine in my SP1. It's dirty so you will need to give it a good cleaning after use. Also it was designed with a 1 in 12 barrel twist in mind.

Back in the early 90's my Dad got one with his Colt R6551. We used it enough that the only issue we ever had was finding a casing inside of the lower which had caused a stoppage*. I'm guessing maybe about a thousand rounds total through it. The rifle and kit was sold before 1994 after Digital went kaput and we fell into hard times.

Fast forward to 2009 and I get a brand new unused kit, still have it and it runs well - even suppressed. I have no experience with it running full auto. Now I just need to find a R6551 and I can try and re-live a piece of my youth.

    * - this was weird as we had no idea *when* the casing ended up in the receiver - it was not from the magazine that was being fired when the stoppage occurred.

Extrapolating from an Atchisson Ceiner kit (without the special M16 added weight) stuck in Ceiner's M16 at Knob Creek one year and it did fine so I would think that would carry over.

Drawbacks are (I think) the 10rds mag is proprietary and from I can recall the cyclic rate is high. If that carries over to other parts(decent chance) something common like a firing pin breaking could turn the kit in to a hunk of nothing without a knowledgeable gunsmith or machinist.

Unless there is something particular about the Colt kit(import issues or it being a complete Colt kit?) that makes it appealing I think I would go CMMG. Nice kits and Black Dog is good to deal with too.
