    just saw this

    https://www.macrumors.com/2020/05/21...mbled-vietnam/

"The mass production of *AirPods* in Vietnam started as early as in March," a person familiar with the matter said. "The Vietnamese officials even granted special permits for a key Apple *AirPods* assembler to help the company bring in engineers to the country for smooth production during lockdowns." Vietnam began easing some lockdown measures in late April.
anything to get money out of China I am good with ! but I do wish they would bring so much more back to USA

but ? are parts of the airpod made in China ?(most likely) again that keyword assembled that needs to become MADE IN __________
and never see China on the end of that again

DVD players would be $200 again and now they are $40 on Amazon.

Hell at this point I'd be happy with Taiwanese imports again.
Surprisingly I had a guy give me about the same example you use. My father-in-law has a Westinghouse LED TV that uses a transformer/power source, the other day when his TV wouldn't power-up I tried to pull the lead out of the power jack and couldn't. Didn't want to get to froggy with it for fear of tearing something loose on the inside. Went to a local electronics supply store to find out if anyone worked on them (TV's) and got involved in a conversation with the owner. He told me that when he opend shop there were 11 technicians in town and now there are none. He said bacxk then a VHS player cost $240.00 dollars and would last forever because you could work on them but now WalMart sells them for $49.00.

I'm a guy who understands what the loss of Main Street USA has meant to the economy overall, but when I said the reality is that many people today are those that don't really have the money to shop anyplace but WalMart the guy was off to the races. Turns out I'm at fault for our problems because I'm not driving 60 miles to a legit TV store and buying a TV that Walmart probably stocks for a hundred less.

Very enjoyable hour or so of largely one-sided conversation, which I ended to take the dead TV to the landfill in the hopes they still had an electronics salvage trailer. BTW - they don't.

If it makes you feel better, I don't think you should have to drive 60 miles to find a high end TV because honestly that shit will be disposable too. It will just have a lot more bells and whistles, it won't actually be better made or made to last. I don't think anyone makes that shit.

And if somebody does make the Awesemo Sony 20 Year TV, you can order it online like everything else. But nobody makes it because nobody buys it. Another problem is tech now moves so fast nobody wants a 20 Year machine. If they make a completely Bulletproof Never FAIL BluRay player and it costs $800 what happens when it's pointless in 10 years because megadrive DVRs become available for $200 and they can download an entire NF series in 10 minutes and they have true HD quality.

I have VCRs that still work because I have stuff on VHS that is either personal content or rare stuff that has never seen DVD. But I have to watch it on a special LED TV with the resolution turned almost all the way down otherwise it really looks like crap.

Also eventually there will be a new format, just as digital replaced analog, sooner or later something will replace digital and everyone is gonna need a new machine.

TSMC is wanting to build that $12b chip factory in Arizona. And they just stopped all new future Huawei orders. Most of their fabs are in Taiwan. Two in China. One in Washington US, and one co-run in Singapore. And in Arizona soon it appears.

(TSMC is the world's largest contract chip manufacturer, based in Taiwan, and makes chips for everyone -- they exclusively make Apple's CPUs/SoC and also have Broadcom, Marvel, MediaTek, nVidia, Qualcomm, and AMD all us TSMC.)

Some electronics will come back to the US -- higher end stuff. The rest can go to Mexico and places like that from China.

I don't check everything I buy if it comes from China as too much currently does. I do check some stuff and try and avoid the China made stuff when possible. If I know or suspect something is from China and I know of and have access to a replacement made elsewhere, I buy the non-China made one.

Several years ago Motorola offered a phone that was "US assembled", moto x it think. I think I bought the only one, wasn't around long. Other examples of this kind are out there. So some of these companies have tried but the market didn't take the bait.

A friend came up with a use for old disposable televisions. He collects them up, takes them to "trigger trash" areas, and sets them out. This way he attracts the Bubbas to fewer spots where he can he at least have some influence on backstop, safety, etc. Then he cleans up the trash and collects the brass.

You should have tried to fix it. There are numerous YouTube videos about this. We bought a LG flatscreen 10 years ago. 5 years ago it quit turning on. A search on Google led me to several possible reason. I chased all those reasons down with a basic multi-meter with my 15 y.o. daughter helping. We found the burned out tiny fuse and while we couldn't buy a replacement we were able to solder in a fuse holder and installed a new fuse. Back in business and still going strong five years later. I've resurrected a very expensive refrigerator and the washer/dryer numerous time through Google and Youtube. The icing on the cake is when the now 20y.o. daughter called me last week and said she fixed her own t.v. via info from the internet.

We got our flatscreen TV repaired a few years ago and my wife's father could not understand why paid to fix our TV instead of just going to China Mart and paying the same money for a new one.

Our throw away society benefits China and the ports in California more than anyone else.

In much of the US, boycotting Israel is either a crime, or has other penalties or disabilities.

Unfortunately, the majority of consumers only care about cost.

No, not quality, COST! Cheap sells better than quality. Quality generally costs more. Further, many people don't need a quality product either.

Now add Intellectual Property theft and the business case becomes even less favorable.

China has been and continues to be a bad actor for more than just the Corona / Wuhan Virus.

This doesn't even begin to address atrocities like 're-education camps' and other human rights abuses. Add indentured-servitude for a big portion of Africa and environmental damage in the Pacific Ocean not to mention issues in the South China Sea or Hong Kong with Taiwan TBD.

So yes, like Yoni, I want to avoid Chinese products but, that simply isn't practical in many cases.
