    SF Worship

Here's a well written article about identifying your mission and then developing the skills and tools to accomplish your mission.

Great article. It mirrors what I have said here many time. Mission, what is the mission.

I have said many times that a civilian in the USA, might be better served using a small PCC (MP5K, mini Uzi, B&T TP9 or other small model) than a rifle.

Don't get me wrong I love a great rifle, but it isn't the tool for every mission.

I stand in awe of the American gun culture, because it has pushed the cutting edge for generations. But a high percent of members of the community stress hardware, over software.

I feel personally attacked here haha. That was an excellent article that has an accurate view on the current market/mindset. I get LARP-ing is fun, hell we all do it to an extent, but how many insta operators are flashing their nods and body armor, and yet couldn’t start a fire without a lighter?

Eh, nothing over thought-provoking if in this. Kinda the same old "if you buy cool gear, you obviously don't train enough with it" line of thinking, with an added "why does a civilian need XXX, because self-defense shootings only happen in XXX circumstances". I thought for a minute it might go into the trend I'm seeing of people justifying crappy gear with "I got to X training courses a year!" without any understanding of the quality of that training, but nope. I had also hoped for a deconstruction of the shooting community's love for SF, but again, nope.
It's f*****g great, putting holes in people, all the time, and it just puts 'em down mate, they drop like sacks of s**t when they go down with this.

I tend to agree. I don't like the mindset that if you probably won't ever use it, it's stupid to have it. But the fact of the matter is that the chances of your average civilian ever finding themselves in a situation where they would even need a semi-automatic rifle, and another weapon like a shotgun or pistol wouldn't suffice, is slim. Most likely, a civilian is going to be defending their home against a burglar, or themselves against a mugger, not a heavily armed group of terrorists/enemy soldiers. Should we now join the anti-gunners and fudds and tell people not to buy ARs and AKs because they don't need them, and they need to be spending the money that would have gone towards a rifle on training more with their pistols??

Yes, it goes without saying that a guy with an old DPMS with a Barska red dot who shootings thousands of rounds in training each year is going to be a hell of a much better gunfighter than some dude who spent $5000+ on a top of the line Knight's AR, Aimpoint, IR pointer, and NVDs and then never touches them again. I also agree that it's laughable when I listen to guys who think that the amount of guns they own somehow alone equates to their ability to fight with said guns. But my thought is this: Get whatever the hell you want. Get what SF uses if you can afford it; they get to use good shit. Then train with it.

What was the guy trying to save us from...spending money? Does anyone actually "worship" SF's guys and their stuff? Maybe "worship" was just metaphor.

I think you are being thrown off by the word worship. The point was there is a gamer contingent that has crossover into competitive shooting. At one end of the spectrum it's about as harmless as cowboy action shooting only instead of playing "old west" people play "special forces" of course there is the other end of the spectrum where people show up with swat helmets and ballistic plates and a 360 degree range yeager mentality and Sonny Paluska safety skills.
It's hard to be a ACLU hating, philosophically Libertarian, socially liberal, fiscally conservative, scientifically grounded, agnostic, porn admiring gun owner who believes in self determination.

I get his point, but being serious about self/home defense and buying cool shit 'cause it's also a hobby aren't mutually exclusive.

If I wanted what SF-types run I'd have an HK416 SBR'd (okay, semi-auto) with a can, LPVO, IR rig , and NODs. However, I don't have those items. I've got more guns than I'll ever [hopefully] need, but most are set up to what I want, not a particular spec. It's a "hobby" with real-world uses.

That said, I do have an M4A1 clone set up like current Army Infantry issue: SOCOM profile barrel, Knight's RAS, Matech BUIS, and a TA-31 ACOG. Why? Just like I have an M1 Garand, I like what was/is current standard Infantry issue.

The rest are equipped with do-dads I prefer such as the BCM MCMR handguards (on several) and Aimpoint T-1 or T-2's. Certainly not "mil spec" or Gucci, and for sure not HSLD, but functional and ergonomic for me. So I think it's quite possible to have a "hobby" that can also translate into a realistic tool if God forbid you ever need it.

As far as actually using them is concerned I believe firmly that the key word is proficient. Not expert or professional-level mastery, but able to hit what you aim at. You don't have to be Rob Leatham or Kyle Lamb, but if a threat materializes they should have a pretty good chance at being hit by what you send their way......or at least make them duck!

Yeah, I've seen a few of those guys at my local 3gun/pistol matches. No big deal, like you said...harmless. The last one I met, last month at a USPSA match, was fully kitted up, plates and all. If I remember properly he was practicing for another match, maybe in Az., where everyone was going to be kitted up.

I remember when I was pretty young I really wanted to be like Sgt Saunders (Vic Morrow) in Combat. I even had the plastic Thompson, I think Mattel made it. Never missed that show. Now guys do it with real guns and gear.
