My third-party opinion is you two are talking past each other. Both are valid perspectives. That is EXACTLY where things are headed if we don't get out in front of it. Who WANTS to be a cop these days? Seriously- go look at Greg Ellifritz's blog sometime. He's a great guy, very tactically savvy, a great officer by all account. He flatly tells people to not go into Law Enforcement, that people who are already in to develop secondary income so they can leave...Ask any of the LEO's here how many of them are happy in their jobs and not looking to get out etc....
In my own town, we have TWICE lowered the standards in the last few years related to physical ability and past convictions/drug use for hiring officers. That means that the people who ARE going into Law Enforcement are not exactly as good as they used to be, less qualified, sketchier......With budget shortfalls- which WILL HAPPEN due to decreased tax revenues- our mayor was on TV last week saying even though they are 60 patrol officers short they will not hire more due to Covid related Tax Revenue declines...there will be fewer officers, less training, less new equipment. How does that make the job better/easier and attractive to quality applicants?
Where does that lead? Pretty soon Alonzo Harris is the NORM in policing. So again, YES, I understand very well the consequences of doing anything. You don't seem to understand or appreciate the consequences of NOT DOING ANYTHING- as history makes very plain.
