Oh look, a DI vs piston debate. On M4c. In 2020. I would have thought this was TOS circa 2003.

With regard to the fact that hk chose to offer a heavy profile barrel without chrome lining or nitriding on the mr556 series, it’s not the end of the world but it sure is a shame.

    Basically they saved me $3k.

I had no problem buying a USC and a UMP parts kit and spending a buttload of money to arrive at a correct semi only UMP.

I tried to do the same thing with the SL8 and a G36k kit but it had problems like wonky LOP, poor sight options (the Hendsoldt dual optic was horrible) and couldn't be fired with the stock folded and goofy crap like that....so I sold it.

I really, really wanted the MR556 and MR762 to be the real deal. They weren't and it wasn't as simple as dropping in the correct 416 upper. HK doesn't want me to have the rifle I wanted so fine...whatever.

I have more than enough Colts doing the job and the next time I have 3k I'll probably grab a KAC.

If HK wants to give us a precision rifle for "sportmen" they need to start cranking out PSG1s or semi only MSG90s again.

The M38 designated marksman rifle can be used by 19yo kids to engage point targets at up to 600m. I would swear that USMC said something about “more accurate” or “Kraut space magic barrel” when adopting the M27 and M38.

Do those not have chrome lined barrels? Don’t answer.

    Why I never bought a MR 556:

    1. No chrome lined barrel. If German export laws or 922R was an issue, they could have had DD or FN make them CHF barrels.

    2. No adjustable gas block like on the newer 416A5 variants

That simple. The same applies to the MR 762.

DD does the barrel contouring and chambering for HK USA using blanks from Germany. Upside is the MR barrels are the A&D uber steel found on the 416. Downside is no chrome lining, no nitriding, and as such they seem especially susceptible to copper fouling.

Nothing ever really changes does it, this is from 2007.

An open letter to the gun community from HK’s marketing department:

In a world of compromises, some people put the bullets in the magazine backwards…But it doesn’t matter, because our gun is on the cover of the Rainbow Six video games. Look how cool that SEAL coming out of the water looks… If you buy a $2,000 SOCOM, you will be that cool of an operator too. And chicks will dig you.

At HK, we stuck a piston on an AR15, just like a bunch of other companies have done, dating back to about 1969. However ours is better, because we refuse to sell it to civilians. Because you suck, and we hate you.

Our XM8 is the greatest rifle ever developed. It may melt, and it doesn’t fit any accessories known to man, but that is your fault. If you were a real operator, you would love it. Once again, look at Rainbow Six, that G36 sure is cool isn’t it? Yeah, you know you want one.And by the way, check out our new HK45. We decided that humans don’t need to release the magazine with their thumbs. If you were a really manly teutonic operator, you would be able to reach the controls. Plus we’ve fired 100,000,000 rounds through one with zero malfunctions, and that was while it was buried in a lake of molten lava, on the moon. If you don’t believe us, it is because you aren’t a real operator.

By the way, our cheap, mass-produced, stamped sheet metal guns like the G3 and MP5 are the bestest things ever, and totally worth asinine scalpers prices, but note that cheap, mass-produced, stamped sheet metal guns from other countries are commie garbage. Not that it matters, because you’re civilians, so we won’t sell them to you anyway. Because you suck, and we hate you, but we know you’ll be back. We can beat you down like a trailer park wife, but you’ll come back, you always do.

    Buy our stuff.

    Sincerely

I'm sure that, for some people that buy these, the gun leaves the safe once a month to be admired. And then gets put away again.

Once upon a time HK sold us anything, including a swing down lower HK G3 semi auto. ATF banned it.

Then HK sold us the 41/91 and 43/93 series. Bush 41 banned it from import in 1989.

Then HK made ban compliant rifles like the 911, SR9, SR9T, SR9TC and ATF simply added them to the ban list.

So HK focused on handguns and brought us the USP and people bitched for years that we wanted rifles.

So HK brought us two rifles that were absolutely BAN PROOF, the SL8 and the USC. And people bitched about how neutered they were and blamed HK rather than blame our own asinine import laws. If we didn't have the 89 Import Laws HK would have gladly sold us a semi auto XM9, G36 or whatever else we wanted.

Now I ask you, if YOU owned HK. How many times would you try to cater to the US market, develop new compliant firearms only to be told "not good enough" and then have the US gun buying community blame YOU for US import laws?

But aren't German export laws equally, if not more, to blame?
