I grew up there, and its easily the best state for potential recreation, but everyone I knew who still live there are all in on the mask rules and lockdowns. I haven't been around since around 2007 and its really hard on at me at times because of how much I miss a lot of it but its about like crossing from west Germany into the DDR at this point.

A guy I grew up with and was friends with even just berated my wife about a post she made trying to educate people on different mask materials and the douche went off about how he actually cares for his fellow human beings while totally ignoring the actual data she was putting up. These people are so brainwashed this guy graduated from UCLA and has had to live with his grandma because of the COL is so high. Part of that is demand but a lot of is their zoning and new building restrictions that make a starter house 300-500k unless you live 200 miles from any decent population center. So he gets to slave away paying UCLA debt money and can't even afford to live on his own. The saving grace to live in SoCal is his grandma who bought her house decades ago before the stupidity and has grandfathered tax rates.

People want to know why so many states have Cali refugees that show up its a perfect example of the emerging disparity between the sanctioned true believers and everyone else. They love illegals because they don't have to pay actual middle class wages to a significant chunk of the non-silicon valley / entertainment class workforce.

I have a good friends relative who lives in Santa Clara like right on top of some big Silicon Valley entity and is in the same position. Last I knew she’s been turning down offers upwards of 6 million. She’s in her 70s on top of it.

I have a problem with caste systems. We need equal application of laws, not special exemptions/privileges for police, judges, political contributors, and so on.

If you can't defund them or make them enforce your "rules," I guess you have them investigated.

Oregon Gov. Kate Brown met Friday with three Oregon State Police troopers who were seen on video earlier this week defying a mandated statewide mask order while visiting a Corvallis coffee shop.

The incident occurred the same day the governor's mask order took effect as a response to the coronavirus outbreak.

Brown said on social media that the meeting with the troopers was her idea. In posts to Twitter and Facebook, she is seen having an outdoor chat with the troopers, all of whom are wearing masks.

The store's assistant manager told OregonLive.com that one of the troopers entered the shop without a mask on Wednesday and said, “Governor Brown has no authority to take our civil liberties. We aren’t going to wear masks."

The assistant manager added that the trooper said, “F--- Kate Brown.”

One of the troopers has been placed on leave and three others face an investigation. None of the troopers has been identified.

One of the things I deal with the most as a regular citizen going about my business is fishing stops. I work nights and even in a small town there is often 2-3 cops sitting along the main HWY through town with the sheriffs deputies sitting just beyond the city limits. Anyone with a burnt out light gets a stop. They couldn't care less about a burnt out light but its an excuse to get contact with someone and see what they're up to. The official line is something like 'motorist safety' but the real reason is get drugs or a DUI and try to get up in the car to see whats in there. I got pulled over once in this way for a 'broken plate bulb' when my car has two bulbs and only one was burnt out. Didn't even get asked for insurance or registration just my license to do a warrant check and to see if any smells or plain sight shit was around. This puts regular good people at odds with the police right off the bat because its like everyone is guilty until proven otherwise. Now every time I drive by one I get to wonder if I have a random bulb out I get to get pulled over for at 2AM after working a 10-12 hour shift.

The vast majority of the country has no problem with police doing a legit investigation, and arresting people doing bad things. Its easy to go beyond that and use 'busting criminals' as an excuse to start shaking the tree of society to see what falls in their lap. A metaphor but people get really pissed off when they get hassled and weren't doing anything criminal, and taking that a step further anything actually hurting anyone.

Theres also a difference in big blue state and city police vs red state and rural areas. For a long time I've watched police shows where deep blue area cops love nothing more than taking guns away from people. Their state laws don't allow people to protect themselves, and the fervor some of these officers have to get people on gun crimes that are ****ing stupid is a scary thing to see coming from the perspective of something that is an absolutist 2A supporter. A rural sheriffs deputy that owns guns and supports people's rights is a lot different of a cop than some deep blue state officer.

I do have respect for the guys in the inner city dealing with absolute shit heads all day and night for years on end. I can see how people become jaded and lose an aspect of humanity that keeps most people within the rules of a civil society. At a certain point people just get mad and stop giving a **** about doing the right thing and start playing mental games to justify out of bounds or questionable behavior. It happens in the mil too when you deploy a guy 5 times in 5 years or regular army units doing 15 month rotations. At a point people just lose their moral compass and take on an 'ends justify the means' approach. Doing the right thing is a lot harder than doing the easy wrong, and everyone has a limit. Some people just get setup for failure right out of the gate.

This is so complex there's no 1 or 2 or even 3 'quick fixes' but what this reminds me most of is Vietnam vs. GWOT era unit and troop rotations. In Vietnam they deployed entire units who stayed there for years. People rotated in and out but the unit never left until the end of the war or some draw down. So a new fresh dude would show up and learn from the salty dudes who had been there a long time. The animosity and hatred gets transferred to the new guy so they are poisoned before even getting off the ground. In GWOT entire units get rotated in and out so people started out together with a fresh perspective and for the most part the bitter/sour types already ETS'ed out or you knew what their outlook was months before you step foot in country. Put that dichotomy onto our police forces, and I don't see how anyone mentally survives working a shit inner city area for 20 years or how they're influencing the new guys coming in.

In the George Floyd case it was the veteran dude with almost 20 on the job who ****ed up while the guy who had been there less than a week was the one asking if it was ok.
Well said. Yes, this is why I'm ambivalent about the police. Stopping people just to fish is one of the things that really upsets people and I don't think its good for LE either. However, I will say that 2AM is prime time for drunk drivers and I know the cops are hyper vigilant later at night for drunk drivers.

And I agree that attitudes are a problem too. Its more prevalent than some might imagine. But I understand how it happens. Like you said, dealing with stupid scum gives cops a certain twisted view of society. Attitudes develop. Some Cops become tribalistic in their views and attitudes.

It is a tough and complex problem.

Saw that this morning. Most people don't know that Kate Brown is the sister of former Gov. Jerry Brown (nut job) of California. She is a left wing authoritarian loonie tune.

It's a shame how the Govs are treating LE.
