What is the actual difference between the two, other than the V-bob? I don't have a local shop where I can examine either, but I'm looking for a commander-length I can carry. Does the V-bob make that big of a difference for CCW?

I don’t know if the V-bob makes a huge difference in carry (never CCW’d one), but it feels AMAZING in the hand. I was shocked when I first picked one up. made me think JMB missed out on something.

I'd have to agree. I never saw the need for a bobbed 1911 until I picked up my Guardian. Perfect fit in my hand. I'm considering bob tailing my other 1911's. (seriously)
Having owned and carried a bobtailed Nighthawk Talon II for 10 years, a bobtail is great for conceal carry but hurts you with reloads. If I did it again, I would try what Wilson is doing with their round butt mag wells. Might take a gunsmith to fit it on a Wesson frame but it is on my bucket list with a commander sized Vigil
I decided the beavertail wasn't a necessity and managed to find a Vigil commander. Can't wait to shoot it. Got it for $1100-something. There's no other gun with the features it has in that price range, even though I would've spend a little more for another Wiley Clapp, but I couldn't find the 9mm lightweight anywhere.
I like the rounded butt (that's what she said), too. What are the options out there for that? Is it just Wilson?
You mean bobtail main spring housing. The Vigil has a beavertail grip safety.
I think the round butt magwell is a Wilson thing but I may be wrong. Let us know how it runs.
Wilson sells this: https://shopwilsoncombat.com/Bullet-Proof-One-Piece-Magwell-Full-Size-Round-Butt-Aluminum/productinfo/627ARB/
I tried emailing and calling Dan Wesson about magwell compatibility but never got an answer.
Thanks

Yes, bobtail. They also sell just the rounded mainspring housing. https://shopwilsoncombat.com/Mainspr...ctinfo/92BRBO/ I'd be more interested than that as I don't want to add length, even a little, with a magwell.
You can bobtail any single stack 1911 frame. Ed Brown is the one that popularized it. He sells a fixture to make the job easy https://www.edbrown.com/product/ed-b...tallation-jig/ and Brownell's sells his housings in 10 different flavors. https://www.brownells.com/handgun-pa...-prod1346.aspx
I've used his jig to do a conversion. Not having a mill I pretty much did everything by hand. It wasn't easy but the results were very good.
If you want faster reloads with no additional length, the Chen magwell conversion is the best solution I've seen. That one requires equipment and skills beyond the hobby 1911 plumber's skill, but the results are pretty spectacular.

What if this whole crusade's a charade?
And behind it all there's a price to be paid
For the blood which we dine
Justified in the name of the holy and the divine…
