Been shooting 1911s since mid 70s and have had a lot - Wilson, Baer, Colt, Springfield and a few lesser brands I can’t recall. What I’ve settled on for when I carry a 1911 is a DW Valor.
Near custom quality, beautiful aesthetics (duty coat), American-made with no mim parts. ACCURATE!!!
On the down side, I don’t care for Heinie sights - so those have been replaced by much brighter night sights.
EVERYTHING I need or want in a 1911, and at a decent price.

    +1. That’s good advice.

Consider the Springfield Range Officer Operator. Nice pistol.

For a "keeper", IMO that is, any gun that you a) really wanted, b) still does what you need it to do... and well, c) thoroughly tested and tested some more. You have history with that piece and it's never let you down. That's one I'm keeping.

Funny, I’m in a similar situation as the OP.

About to turn 40 and want a new 1911 to commemorate.

    I’ll give my advice.
Originally bought a kimber in my late 20’s, they’re nice looking guns, but mine just did not work well. FTF FTE, frustrating.

I now own a TRP, no rail, with the armory kote and non 2 tone version. Currently has some rail scales grips.. It has always shot reliably, accurate and IMO has nice look and finish. The front checkering is rough and more aggressive than any advantage it could provide. Always been a fan of the DW specialist and have regrettably passed on a couple recently for sale. However, i cannot help but still want to own a Wilson or Nighthawk . They just speak to me and I don’t think I’ll be satisfied until I own something on that level.

There are so many mid tier and high end 1911’s to choose from that will be reliable, accurate, and comfortable dependent upon the shooter. To me, it really comes down to the appearance/feel and it being “the” 1911 or 1911’s that you want to own. They remind me of diver watches where you’ll have to decide the amount you’re willing to spend and what will satisfy your eye before you can consider yourself done.

Thanks all for the input! I ended up picking up a used but as new Ed Brown stainless Kobra, 5 inch, for $1950. Fit and finish is impeccable. Hope to shoot it soon.

There was a thread here regarding the new Vickers Springfield government model. Very nice gun. And I'm not even a 1911 guy. Should run you about $1,500
