    Rossi 92 44 magnun or 357

Would there be a reason to buy one over the other?

Reloading costs of 44 ammo is more expensive, though I prefer loading them over 357s. Myself I have a 24” M92 in 357 and love it!
Given that 10-shots are a group and 5-shots may be a favorable trend ... know that just one good 3-shot group can make you an instant internet superstar!

.44Spl/Mag is just never going to be as cheap as .38/.357, and there’s not nearly the selection either - With 110gr .38spl it’s like blasting .22mag, and I can take it all the way up to 180gr .357mag heavy rounds, and everything in between.

Don’t have a Rossi, but my 1894 Marlin .357 is my favorite gun.

I have a .357/.38 caliber EMF Hartford lever action rifle. It was made under contract by Rossi. It will shoot 5" groups at 100 yards with good ammunition. A Remington 125g JSP load chronographs at 2124 fps and it will print a 10 shot sub 5" group at 100 yards if I do my part. Lighter loads using 125g to 158g projectiles at 1100 fps to 1400 fps are fairly accurate.

I owned a B-92 Browning chambered in .44 Spl/.44 Mag. It was more expensive to shoot and recoil can be an issue if you shoot 80-100 rounds when you go to the range. .357 Mag. ammunition is easier to find than .44 Mag. ammunition in my part of the country.

Both are good calibers, but for several reasons I would have to give a .357 Mag. lever action rifle the nod.

What are you trying to do with it?
Scope it and hunt? for that a 44; although a 357 will drop deer just as dead.
Or leave open or ghost ring sights and shoot cowboy/competition? For that I definitely recommend the 357.

Do you already have a revolver in either caliber?

    Get both.
I have the Rossi 92 trapper in .44mag.
    18 months ago I couldn’t find a .357 model so I had to settle on a Henry.

    Best advise yet.

I have a pair of Marlins. One in 357 and one stainless steel in 44. Can’t get enough of ‘em

The .357 Magnum is a great cartridge in a lever gun. Ballistics at 100 yards are very close to what a handgun cranks out at the muzzle and recoil is very modest. I have a Marlin 1894C and a 16" Rossi 92. I would start with the 357 unless you just like big bores or hunt bear or big boars.

My 20” 92 is especially nice for newbies with .38. Does not scare them at all. I’d highly recommend getting a cowboy action job. One finger lever operation and improved trigger. Don’t remember who did mine. Arizona guy I think.
