Dunno if this may have happened to you, but I frequently have to drop what I’m doing for work. Lately it has been somewhat common for me to try to order something, get a call, and come back to it in 30 minutes or an hour and its out of stock.

Is it possible with the panic that several people were buying the same thing at the same time? Companies that do what you're accusing them of usually do it all the time and how many panics have we had in the last 15 years?
As an example, you can set your panic watch by the prices on Cheaper Than Dirt
I would agree with you both if that was the case. It literally took me 5 minutes to load the cart and pay the bill. I would also agree with you both if the OUT OF STOCK notice came before the PAY ME button.
EDITED TO ADD: correction, it took me 3 minutes to complete and pay for my order. I looked at the screen shots and the time stamps.

I don't know what you bought so I can only speculate but if it's something like ammo I can totally see this happening. Two weeks ago Aim Surplus sent an email with new ammo arrivals and they happened to get PPU 556. I clicked on the link which took me to that page and showed that the ammo available. I go through the process of buying only to find out it's now out of stock. I wasn't charged but the ammo was suddenly out of stock. I was far from the only one who saw the email and there were probably a million other people doing the same thing within seconds of each other
