I only buy new now a day, so i do not have that problem with receiving a "hot" firearm. Tho i will sell them to the pawn shop.

Some makers have dropped some of their 40s, or so I'm told.
Interesting that the big 2 (Glock and Smith M&P) are still making them, even as law enforcement sells theis8and goes to the 9mm.
By the way, I just bought my first 40. I wanted a gun I could throw in the car. Got a 40 in the same model as my EDC 9MM. Paid considerably less (police trade in).

I think there will be diehard 40 cal fans like there are 45acp fans. Best friend was G22 through and through, still is, except his shoulder, elbow and wrist can't take a very long shooting session without pain.
He carries a 9mm now, likes it like a dose of Chocolate EX-LAX.

If I agreed with you, we'd both be wrong.
The last thing I want to do is hurt you,
but it's still on my list.
I started with 40 when I was younger and naive. It works great. It has more recoil than it needs. If they would have stayed with 950fps @180gr maybe it would lose some snap in certain guns. But most 180 PD loads are well over 1000fps now.
I think 40 could have a future if they would water it down a little bit. 180gr at 850-900fps feels like a lighter-shooting 45 and is an absolute joy in all but the lightest smallest guns. I prefer one aspect of 40 and 10mm-- the cartridges are easier for my not-so-nimble fingers to manipulate. I find I can load the mags better and its just easier to handle all around.
The reduced capacity of 40sw relative to 9mm is moot for almost all SD uses. Vast majority of incidents will be 3rds or less, so 10-12rds is plenty.
Nothing wrong with 40sw at all, it's perfectly viable even today. But it's a bit of a tweener that is overcome by events.
This sounds like the old arguments against 10mm, which resulted in .40S&W...
My go-to reloads are 155gr over 5.0gr of Unique at about 890-950fps, depending on barrel length... Easy.
FWIW, 3.0gr of TrailBoss yields 650-675fps in my Glock 23s and 22s, and they run fine with 13lbs recoil springs.
They are still making the 40 caliber and they have it in Gen 5 and this is from Glock inc. who sent me an email today.
I have only a couple of 40SW guns, but I have 357Sig factory barrels for them....
I think the only thing that may revive the .40 is a magazine capacity limitation. Already in place in blighted states like NY and CA. I wonder what the sales trends are in those states.
Is it true that the Gen5 Glock .40s have a wider and heavier slide than previous gens? I've heard it is because they eliminated the "third pin" so for safety and durability they had to beef it up somewhere.
