I had some of the first RevMs loaded to 30 with the covers on in storage for 7 or 8 years.

Most of the covers had popped off but they all worked fine.

I think I have 5 or 6 loaded mags at any given time and about 10 training mags that I use. I don’t really like having loaded mags in storage as ammo is kept in cans in a safe. Mags are mostly in the attic.

I had a handful of Gen 2s that had been loaded to 30 for like 7 years. I recently ran 2 of them on full auto without issue.

ETA I did not use dust covers and they made it through multiple moves. Stored in trunks and all not really cared for.

Like many others, I have some that have been loaded since about 2011-2012. Some with dust covers some without. No cracking noted on any of them. I may cycle the ammo out of them if I get really bored. Maybe.

Got 8 Gen 2s which were loaded to 30 no caps and and put in storage in 2012. Early this year put them back into use, no problems with any of them so far.

You must have a time machine, Gen 3 didn't come out until late 2012...

I don’t like loading mags at the range. I load up a bunch, shoot ‘em at the range, then shortly thereafter load them again. So basically they sit loaded 99.9% of the time. That’s all mags, pistol and rifle. PMAGs I never use the covers. I never have issues with any of them.

For regular consumers this is true.

I was not a regular consumer at that time

I loaded a bunch of gen ones to 30 8-10 years ago and put them in an ammo can. No covers. I’ll have to see if I have any left. I think I dipped into that supply in 2018, don’t remember how deep. They’d be in my hot ass garage.

Edit: they’ve been emptied. Oldest loaded mags left are HK and USGI

I have eight of the original "Patent Pending" PMAG's that were loaded with 30 rounds and the covers put on them in early 2009. They got forgotten until recently during the course of two moves and two divorces. Still good to go.

I use M3 mags at work, loaded to 30 rounds. I have several without covers that have been loaded constantly since 2013 timeframe. About once a year, the rounds are rotated, but the magazines were only empty for the short period that it took to rotate the ammunition. Theses magazines are stored in the vehicle and therefore are exposed to the heat and cold. No issues.

Any long term storage magazines, or extra magazines carried at work to be used/handed out to my guys during an active shooter incident, have the covers on them. No issues.

I've talked to enough engineers over the years who all say the same thing. What wears out a magazine spring is cycling over time, not having the spring compressed.

As for feed lips spreading over time, I consider magazines to be wear items. Which is why I buy and store spares. The spares remain unloaded and mostly in the original packaging.
