i wouldn't dream of screwing up my factory guns (colt 6920, plus on order I have the new KAC SR15 and CD M4LE)

while I don't see anything wrong with it, I also don't mix and match any of my franken guns (black gun, blue gun, green gun, brown gun) but that's because I keep meticulous records of shots fired, malfunctions, etc.

swapping uppers and lowers around would turn those records into garbage. besides, several of them are set up in matched ways where it's impractical or illegal to swap them.

e.g. 7" and 12" uppers only go on the registered lower, and JP LMOS upper only goes on lower with matching speed hammer, and doing something like a 12" upper on a lower that has a magpul PRS is just... goofy

Considering the vast majority of parts are supplied by 2-3 main manufacturers and shared by most of the major gun builders, there are no issues as long as the parts are machined to a quality level. The quality of machining separates the good gun parts from the bad.

This is why the AR is the most popular weapon system on the planet. Modularity rules.

I keep them whole to the extent that the upper/lower fit are the best. I hope to get a .22 upper and in that case, the guns wont' be whole anymore, they can freely swap .22 upper

    What about same/same?

    Guys,

I'm only 18 months into this hobby/sport, so I consider myself new. Two of my rifles are Colts...a 6920 and a 6400C. This site has turned me into a bit of a snob with regard to my rifles..which is good.

My 6400C has a big factory brake on it that sort of looks like a Miculek or like a Holland I have. I've not fired it yet, but I've thought about swapping out the brake.

I'm not going to do that because someone would have to seriously screw with the barrel to do it. So that's that.

I did get a great deal on a new 6920 barrel....

    So here's my question.....

Would swapping barrels---Colt for Colt---be considered "messing" with the rifle? I'm going to save every original 6400C part.

The snob in me has to know what you hard core guys think before I even consider it.

In my mind, "messing" with it is defined by your exit strategy for the rifle. You are not messing with it if you plan to keep it and make improvements to it that have intrinsic value to you.

If you ever plan to sell it, I don't see how you are messing with it as long as you save all original parts and don't make any permanent modifications. If you can return it completely to stock, you would then be selling a broken-in Colt 6400C with a number of unused or hardly used components.
