I get why people like the MP5 but from a guy just using it as a popo gun; the UMP was just less hassle. The MP5 may be a Porsche but the UMP is a Crown Vic.
UMPs drive me crazy because there is no co witness and the irons aren't nearly as nice as diopters. I feel like I can run a MP5 with no red dot and just a white light, I don't feel the same about the UMP.
Now when the UMP came out, before I had one, I lusted after it for 10 years after reading a review in Soldier of Fortune. And maybe that's the problem, I might have built it up in my mind and then it failed to live up to expectations.
And there are few instances where I would take a UMP over a MP5. Now I would take a UMP over just about any other .45 PCC / SMG I can think of off the top of my head and I wouldn't be thinking "Oh I'm screwed I have the UMP or anything", I just prefer the MP5 for most applications. Decades of time with it probably has as much to do with it as anything.
It's hard to be a ACLU hating, philosophically Libertarian, socially liberal, fiscally conservative, scientifically grounded, agnostic, porn admiring gun owner who believes in self determination.
Chuck, we miss ya man.
