Last 500 round case of FGMM I picked up for $410 shipped. CBC not making their 168 SMK load any more is disappointing, good range ammo.

So don’t discredit the 308 vs 6.5 especially since you have what’s a bad ass battle rifle that will make a great intermediate rifle with a 1-6/8 On it. There is the hornady critical defense rounds and speed gold dot. If you’re a reloader you might want to toy around with some of the hornady 110gr vmax rounds. Keith Garcia, one of the top 3gun guys, runs 110gr when he runs heavy division. 110gr in theory could be a good defense round since it would be going fast enough to fragment and light enough to possibly not have crazy over penetration if this is a home defense gun. Also the nosler accubond 125gr could be an option.

Ive got like 1000 110g VMAX I had squirreled away for 300blk...

I guess its probably easier right now to just get some dies, projectiles and cases and setup the Co-Ax to load.

I cant bring myself to pay $30 per 20rd box for ammo...

No, the SST is basically a tipped "Interlock," designed for big game hunting...

Really, just about any non-FMJ is going to work well enough.

.308/7.62 has soooo much more oomph than .223/5.56 that bullet selection isn't really critical... If you hit a bad guy, then it's going to put a massive hole through him, and at "defensive" ranges, you hardly need "precision" ammo like FGMM.

Barrier penetration is still a very important thing to consider in a defensive round, IMO. And it's not like bonded rounds are expensive, Gold Dots and Fusions are both fairly cheap, both the bullets and the rounds, relative to most other .308 Win bullets/cartridges.

Yeah, I just meant it isn't as critical for .308/7.62 as it is for 5.56/.223 or any handgun caliber.

I'd be very curious to see how various locked or bonded (and simple dum-dums and FMJs) .308 cartridges would perform vs. heavy clothing or automotive glass or whatever.

I think I still have two boxes of 308 LE308T1, in the old gray/white boxes. It sits in an ammo can with some 44mag black talons.

I've only fired 308 FMJ. Plenty of ooomph there.

My take, 308 has enough mass to punch through shit OTM or not...

I wouldn't count on that, particularly for something like laminated auto glass. Beyond that, there is the problem of the fact that it does have so much mass; overpenetration is a serious issue to consider as a civilian. So, you could end up with the worst of both sides, poor barrier penetration, but also overpenetration with unobstructed shots (e.g., SMKs).

As one of the guys on TFL says in his sig line:

".30cal: changing cover into concealment since 1906."
