I was out shooting my .223 bolt gun today, but it's a Weatherby Vanguard Series II. It does very well with .223 loads, but it's only a 1/9 twist, so it doesn't do too well with my favorite .223 load, the 75 gr Hornady TAP. My Larue Stealth 2.0 loves the TAP. I also had out my Remington 700 (.243) and it's really making me want to do up a 700 in 5.56. REAL 5.56, or at least .223 Wilde with a new 5.56 1/7 barrel... I love the 700 action. I tried to get one in the walmart sales... someone always been me to it.

One of the USAMU shooters had his .223 Remington 700 Varmint re-barreled with a 26 or 28-inch 1-6.5 twist barrel throated to take 80 and 90 grain bullets. It's a pretty neat 1,000-yard rifle.

If you can find a Rem 5R, that what I have. Mine is a 1/9 twist but shoots 80grain SMK's very well. Otherwise , and equal good gun is the Tikka. Whichever you can find, they are such great guns to shoot and enjoy.

That would be fun... and maybe give a run at a mile shot with some 90s.

    Safe to shoot? Probably so.

But what barrel twist are they? I know the old guns were 1:12 or 1:14, something like that. Probably shoot 55s just Meh'ish if you are lucky but with anything heavier you'll likely be very disappointed. These guns were setup to run 40-60 grain bullets and under back in the day.

Supposed to be 1-12, but 24" long so low to mid 60gr deer bullets may actually do ok.
