    Building an AR308 or 6.5cm

Im in process of building an Ar Ive got lower completed.A couple of questions.which caliber would I get more use out of .308 or 6.5CM.I want a shorter barrel 16 or 18" which length would be better.I would like something versatile to fight with, although i dont see that happening and something that will reach out.For an optic I already have a Leupold 2.5-8X all I need is something around the ring that adjusts power from 2 to 8 something easy to get ahold of.Any thoughts

Out of a shorter barreled (16in) “fighting rifle”, I’d go with 308. Surplus 762 NATO is cheaper to shoot than 6.5CM. If big Army adopts 6.5CM for widespread use, and surplus 6.5CM becomes readily available I would switch over. However that hasn’t happened yet. If your goal is to reach out and touch somebody, and use fancy match loads to shoot out to 900+ meters, than get a 20” or longer 6.5CM barrel and a fancy scope. 308 is capable of going that distance, but it seems you have to work harder to get there, and the round loses more steam on the way than 6.5CM will.

Just my opinion, if you want to reach out then get the 6.5 in a bolt action. If you want a battle rifle, get the AR in .308 / 7.62.

I agree. We have a buddy shotting 155 TMK hand loads out of his 16" .308 to 1300 yards. Half way decent ammo will get you to 750 easy if you have the dope.

If you're going to be using it as a fighting rifle in 16" or 18", .308 all the way. You can grab practice ammo in the form of the OnTarget 147 grain FMJ in the area of ~$240 per 500 when it is available. Much cheaper than 6.5CM.

I’d be curious to see a write up on his build, and load data on his cartridges. Any idea what kind of velocities he is getting?

I see an old text that shows 44gr of 4064 in LC brass. Gets his 13in SCAR to 1000 yards. I'll hit him for some velocity info.

    (he's getting 2444 fps from a 13" SCAR with a Surefire Can)

The load gets fired from his 16" LMT 308 too.

Velocities seem pretty good considering the short barrel length. I’ll have to find a factory load that is similar, to try in my 308 gasser.

Just to make sure . You didn't specify what type of lower it is. It is ar-10 correct?

I am sure you know but can't use a standard ar15 lower for .308 or 6.5 Creed. Could do 6.5 Grendel, 6.8 doc etc on standard lower
