I don't mind modding stuff at all...if it means I don't have to pay hundreds of dollars for a surefire. The key to durability is isolating all the electronics, wires, etc with an epoxy or impact resistant adhesive. The led modules themselves Solarforce/Thrunight etc. are usually identical, and are made by Cree or another manufacturer....that being said, the drivers are different. From my exp. the SF drivers use alot cheaper components, and while the SF drop ins may be brighter, they are not regulated well for battery life, or longevity. Thrunight drop ins are regulated much safer, although The light engine needs to be thermally potted, with an arctic alumina or equivalent thermal epoxy that transfers heat, not electricity. I believe that my L2P is every bit as durable as any sf equivalent....at least it is now.
