    LaRue Tactical Billet Upper

    Gentlemen:

I have seen the new billet upper on LaRue Tactical's website.

    1. Does anyone have any experience with it?

    2. How does it compare with the Vltor billet upper in terms of tolerances and quality of fit & finish?

Tolerances? I don't know. Haven't measured anything with my micrometer. I have one of each, and both builds went together without a problem. Fit and finish are superb. The VLTOR has clean lines but looks a little bulky, especially the forward assist assembly. The Larue Stealth is more like a standard flat top exept beefed up in certain spots. Both receivers line up pretty square with the FF rails I used. Thats what you are paying for.

They are a great upper receiver, especially if you want to keep the traditional look.

I would say that both the VLTOR and LT receivers are high in quality and it really just comes down to appearance.

I have an unbuilt LaRue Stealth here and I won't speak for Mark but I found it machined to have tighter internal dimensions. Where I noticed the difference, by measurement and fitting various parts, is in a tighter bore where the carrier travels and a tighter channel where the carry handle/gas key/bolt cam pin head travels.

Together with another 'machined to remove slack' part (namely the LBC/YM carrier that Wes sells in his precision uppers) I found the diminished play between the upper and carrier to be remarkable. There's very little play at all.

Further, I have an LMT charging handle that gets a little wider the last 1/4 inch nearest the T end. It won't insert fully into the Stealth. All other CHs insert just fine and I attribute the problem to the CH not Mark's dimensioning.

The Stealth is outstanding. The way Mr. LaRue has rethought the upper receiver has resulted in a piece of kit head and shoulders above the rest.

    For what it's worth.
