    Arsenal SAM5 5.56x45 AK

I picked up this Arsenal SAM5 today. It was made in Bulgaria and converted to sec922(r) compliance by the monkeys at Arsenal in Nevada. It has a milled receiver and is chambered for 5.56x45.

New manufacture? I've heard rumors that recent Arsenal milled builds have been sloppy? Any truth to that on yours?

Yes, it's new. The code on the receiver is 60. That means 2020 production. Cosmetically it actually appears on par with my Arsenal SLR-95MB. For those who don't know, that's basically the same rifle that was imported in 7.62x39 around 1995 that has a muzzle brake. I'm hoping that it's smooth and not horribly overgassed like most Arsenal rifles.

I have a Belgium build that I think was from 70's or 80's chambered in 5.45X39 and it runs like a top.

I put 40rds of Wolf 223Rem 55gr FMJ and 20rds of Red Army Standard (Vempyl) 56gr FMJ through it today. Reliability was 100%. The trigger was nice and there was no slap. It's definitely overgassed. Because of this, I didn't bother shooting any 5.56x45 through it. I'll get an adjustable gas piston and see how it does with it. It's kind of heavy, but feels more solid than a typical stamped receiver AK.

    Belgium made a 74?

Actually wasn't sure. Just when you think you know everything, somebody rolls out a picture of an FN AK. I've learned to ask. I was pretty sure, but you never know, and if they did make one, I wanted to see it.

He also said 70s / 80s and that threw me off because very few AK rifles came in during the 80s and they were either Egyptian, Hungarian or Chinese. I don't know of any Bulgarians, especially in 5.45x39, BUT if Belgium made one those would be importable.
