Bulgaria started making AK-74s and AKS-74Us for military use in the late 80’s or early 90’s IIRC but never totally switched over to the 5.45 as their standard cartridge (The collapse of the USSR probably had something to do with it.) and Bulgaria started dumping their 5.45 rifles on the surplus market. A lot of those Bulgarian ‘74s were pretty lightly used and ended up in the US as parts kits, which were assembled into complete guns by builders of varying competence.
I understand that, I had two Bulgy 74s built onto Nodak receivers. I just thought we might have been talking about a Bulgarian import.
