    Remove 3 prong Flash Hider

I have an SG551 with a rotex flash hider with no wrench flats that I am struggling to remove. JDI Firearms has told me that my barrel is threaded M14x1 LH.

I have the barrel secured in a vise with barrel jaws, with some suede strips to avoid marring the barrel. I've tried using a strap wrench, I just can't get the flash hider to budge.

I've looked all around, and the flash hider is not welded on.

How do I get this off? I've been considering 3d printing something to fit inside the flash hider prongs to try and twist it off that way.

This is the only relevant thread that I can find for something similar, that suggests using a strap wrench, or a pipe wrench (not going that route, don't want to mar it)

Apply heat with a heat gun or torch to the threads to help loosen and release any thread locker that was applied.

As for using a strap wrench, I’d consider weaving it thru one or more of the tines, while making sure the bearing edge sits in between tines so as to not bend on of them inward.

Never seen a 551 with a removable flash but that is essentially that same setup I had on my 552. I was able to drop a thin round screwdriver between the flats and spin it off that way.

That is not a Rotex FH. That’s the standard 552 FH. I think the 3D printed fixture is a nice idea too. AAC made a steel fixture like that for the Blackout FH.

    I’ve don’t this as well.

Thanks, I don't know why but I never thought they would use thread locker on this. I only associate that with suppressor mounts

Oh. I believe you that it's not a Rotex FH, but this was the original ad I bought it from saying that it was.

That's pretty cool, different implementation than what I was thinking. I was thinking of a 1.5" OD outer ring to use with a tap wrench that I have, with the triangle in the middle of an inner ring to go in between the prongs

That AAC design is probably stronger than my idea

I considered similar, I was worried about marring the inside of the prongs. May fall back on this one though

That’s an incorrect description of the FH in JDI’s original BookFace ad. The “Rotex” name comes from the B&T Rotex line of sound suppressors. The Rotex IIA and Rotex V are their 5.56 cans. The FH on yours is the standard 14x1 LH metric threaded 552/553 three prong, not a Rotex.

Thanks again for the heads up on that AAC tool.

I took the upper to my local gun shop, Gun Gallery in Jacksonville, to see if they had the tool in stock, and if it would fit. They were sold out, but their armorer had one at his bench and he removed it free of charge in no time at all.

The AAC tool is well worth owning. It works very well on Surefire 3 prong FH as well.
