    "Tanker" Garand

Yeah, I know there's historically no such animal. Talking the 18" one, likely in .308 as opposed to 30.06.

Shuff's does conversions, but I'd rather not mar my original M1.

Fulton Armory makes them, but holy shiite Batman they're pricey! Like $2700+ pricey. Should come with a set of lips for that much money! With all the reported issues "Tanker" Garands have I would think that a reputable company like Fulton would have their shit together and build one that works reliably (and stand behind it if there are hiccups).

Drawback to Fulton is obviously the $$$ ($2800+ for the .308 one that caught my eye with laminated brown stock and T-37 flash hider). Then there's the wait time, which IIRC is now running 4-5 months.

Anyone happen to own a "Tanker" Garand?

Had one but sold it last year to fund my corvette habit. Mine was in 30.06 on a WWII Springfield receiver. Not sure who did the conversion, but it wasn’t a home brew job. I loved shooting it, and so did everyone else who tried it. It was definitely handier than the original, but the recoil was obviously more. Never had a feeding problem. I bought it in the early 2000s for $700. Cant remember what I got for it when I sold it, but I know I made a decent amount. I sold it to an FFL buddy, so I didn’t get retail, but it didn’t get hurt either.

Friend of mine built a pretty nice one.

A shooting buddy had a factory built, new production (Springfield Armory) "Tanker" Garand in 308---nice rifle---never saw another one---personally, I would probably prefer a BM59 or BM62 in 308 instead...

Have you thought of a RM1 Special vs a Tanker?
The Garland in .308 is a wonderfully fine shooter

The only one I have been around was a jam-a-matic(mainly letting the clip go early even after replacing the clip latch spring and other parts) that I think was a Century(which, if that memory is correct, goes a long way in explaining the primary memory) from the mid to late 1990's.

Fairly sure it was on an original receiver, but can't recall if the barrel was new or reworked which I assume would have necessitated modification to the op-rod. 99.9% sure it didn't have a .30/7.62 sleeve in the chamber since I think that would have caught my curiosity.

Other than that, it handled well and was fun to shoot with malfunction clearing excepted.

Few years back I picked up a CMP .308 Special with a Criterion barrel. Love it. The Garand is .308 is very nice to shoot.

My experience in years past with the tankers was problematic at best. I don't think the CMP has the .308 specials anymore, but you can get a CMP Garand Rack or Service Grade for $750~850 and for another $300 or so get a new Criterion .308 barrel installed along with the spacer. Sell or keep the take off 30-06 barrel.

.308 on the top. 30-06 down below.

So having never owned one, are there any specific indicators that a Garand has been rechambered in .308?
