Anyone else have a MAS 49/56 etc?

I did. About a decade back. Original 7.5 not the hacked Century 308. Definitely a cool rifle should never had traded it.

no but it's something I've been looking into. would love one in 308 provided it's done right as the Frenchie ammo is hard and expensive to come by

Typically there's plenty of 7.5 French made by PPU. I used to buy them from SGammo all the time priced about 75 cents per.

Looking now SGammo has 7.5 for $1 per. But if you already have 308 that's a different story

All those oddball calibers like 7.5 French, 8 Label, 303, 6.5....etc... made by PPU were around 75 cents per round

thats funny , i had one about a decade ago and it was a Century conversion and as i remember it for every one person that said they got a dud there were 20 to speak up saying that simply was not the case with their rifle , i bet i put between 3 and 4 thousand rounds down the pipe of mine and i do not recall a single jam.

i also remember some making their rounds on all the boards yelling from the roof tops the same tripe about them you just spilled only to have countless speak up and account that their rifle/experience is nothing even close to a horror story as they were painting , with that said SOME that did have issues tinkered with the gas systems and eventually got them running just fine and i would go as far as to say that enough time has elapsed that the bugs in the gas systems of some have long been cured on any problematic examples

this was nothing more than simply a prime example of a few that were problematic over shadowing the many that ran fine

im old and memory fogged and if memory serves me correctly i think the gas port was the issue not providing enough pressure to rack the BCG properly/consistently on those that had jamming issues , i do not pretend to know why the port was sufficient on so many and not others

im not saying if given the choice of having a Century Conversion or the French Police Conversion version of the conversion to x51 i wouldn't take the French service rifle over the Century ,but that would be solely based on collectability, and i certainly wouldn't be crying in my soup over the Century if thats the one i ended up with , because that was a fun little rifle , kinda wish i hung onto it now

i recently found two cans of Austrian x51 in my ammo pile left over from that rifle ,and just last night a mag that i didnt remember having that i must have not listed with the rifle when i sold it

Okie dokie! The "countless" is who I don't listen to. Majority do nothing but shoot a few rounds a few times a year. There are "countless" who'll say my brand X is just as good as.... and it never failed me in 40 years. Then you come to find out that the last time that gun saw the light of day was in 1983. On top of that Century has a well earned reputation for making garbage. So pardon me if I don't just jump up and believe everything some random person posted online

i put 3 to 4 thousand rounds through that rifle in less than 5 years of owning it , it was hardly a safe queen , and pardon me for being contrary to your ill informed sky is falling perception of a rifle you never owned ,i wouldn't expect you to take the word of someone that not only owned one , shot the hell out of it ,and lived through the negativity that shrouded the rifle without issue

I put about the same thru mine, back when 7.5 was easier to find. The .308s were known to be spottily problematic. My understanding is the earlier ones were good to go but Century never replaced their chamber reamers and later ones were not up to spec. This might explain the mixed reports. I've not heard of any issues with the 7.5 versions. Indeed the rifle had a very long service life with French forces. I remember when the 49/56 was the symbol of the Foreign Legion in Africa and the Middle East. I also once owned a straight MAS 49 and it performed well also.
