Perhaps the better question is how long will Covid restrictions continue to escalate.

    -----

California Gov. Gavin Newsom said in a Monday press conference the state is considering a new stay-at-home order.

"If these trends continue, we're going to have to take much more dramatic, arguably drastic action," Newsom said.

And the answer is until we start throwing the bums out.

In North Carolina we went from Phase 1 to Phase 2 to Phase 1.5 back to Phase 1 to Phase 3 back to Phase 1.5. Our Esteemed and Very Important Governor is speaking shortly about what may be next. Smart money is more restrictions.

I think they’re punishing people for voting for Trump.

I think we are hitting the inevitable point where there is a staggering number of COVID positive/infectious people at the same time people have shutdown/stay at home fatigue. 50% or more Americans feel that COVID is not a danger to them OR that wearing a mask is sufficient mitigation to allow them to travel/shop/work freely.

It will be interesting to see what happens assuming a Biden presidency. How long will they blame Trump? Will they risk the airlines and airports by significantly cutting domestic travel? Will the numbers magically change to reflect the fact that the US has neither more or less infection than the rest of the world?

No matter what happens, Covid will continue to spread until a combination of recoveries and immunizations breaks the chain of transmission. It will be spring/summer before we have any hope of a return to "normal" and God only knows what normal will look like by then.

Looks like death took a holiday... or the counters have returned from holiday. Deaths surged to 2,600 yesterday. Hospitalizations hit another record high near 99,000. 90,000 a week ago.

It wasn't Covid-19 that killed them, it was eating two dozen Deviled Eggs.

Here in Hamilton county (Chattanooga) we're exceeding record levels in all key Covid metrics. New cases, hospitalizations, ICU patients and deaths. However, life goes on pretty much as normal. We have mask mandates that apply to inside stores but law enforcement said they're not dealing with it. People are out and about as usual. I was at BestBuy curbside pickup the other day. The parking lot was full, but the few slots for curbside pickup were empty other than me and one other vehicle. While at Ace Hardware many folks were walking in and out without masks, and several were of course wearing the mask under their nose. There isn't much public appetite for lockdowns and all that around here.

Although I only see an occasional person without a mask if one were to wake up from a long coma today they wouldn't know there was a pandemic going on with a few minor exceptions. People are out working, shopping, eating....etc..
