    Dominant Eye Issue..

    Howdy,

My eyes have gotten to the point where my left eye is clearer than my right; I'm right handed. For rifle no problem. Can still get a crisp image of the front site. Pistol... not so much any more. My left eye is clearly sharper....

I've been trying to train my right eye to be the dominant one again as it's confusing switching from left to right! I got a new Sig P365 yesterday and hustled out to the hills to give it a try. Since I was shooting it more like a target pistol to judge accuracy (at 10 yards it's a bullseye machine!) and I kept switching back and forth subconsciously.....

Once that started I was back and forth..... It seems like my right eye is actually getting a bit better (or my arms are getting longer!) so I'm wondering if any of you experienced this change and best approach to handle it.

I tend to be left eye dominant but again with rifle do just fine right eye....

    Thanks!

Try the McMillan Tilt. Invented by a cross-dominant Marine and Olympic gold medalist. Tilt your hand around 15 to 45 degrees--no more than 45--off vertical and it should bring the sights over in front of your left eye.

Suck it up and continuing training on the right or begin to embrace red dot optics on pistols.

    Haha!

I gotta say it is improving...danged cost of ammo has me limited in shooting but I can focus a little better with right eye.

I can't tell if it's so much dominant or just better vision eye. I think there's a difference.

It's strange because I didn't even notice I was using left eye with pistol till it was pointed out! Picking up rifle while tricky there's no urge to use left eye....

Maybe time for an optometrist visit......

    Thanks!

If you didn't notice until someone pointed it out, is it really that big a deal?

    Do ya think?

Before you go get someone to measure from your eye to the front sight as you normally shoot. They should be able to figure out a correction for you in shooting glasses - if it;s that important.

Another tactic migh be to get a roll of frosted scotch tape and put a piece on your shooting glasses over your left eye. This can aide you in learning to shoot with both eyes open. Don't cover the whole lens, just a strip over the pupil area.

Cross-dominance in pistol shooting is not a real big deal IMVHO unless you are shooting in a one handed discipline such as bullseye or international pistol where your stance would cause you to tilt your head if you were cross dominant.

If you stand in front of a mirror with both eyes open and press out to a firing position the pistol should be aligned under the dominant eye - or the eye which gives you the best vision. Now close either eye and sight in, the pistol should move to under that eye, open that eye and close the other, same deal pistol should be under that eye in the mirror.

In a safe dry-fire area practice looking at the target and bringing the pistol between the target and your eyes, maintaining target focus with both eyes. Your brain knows what you need to see and you should sort out the sight picture you need for close to intermediate ranges.

ETA: I'd like to see a definitive link where the McMillan Tilt was explained as a cross dominant technique, rather than a technique to lock the shoulder, elbow and arm to aid in rapid fire.

I am right eye dominant but my left eye sees the sights slightly clearer than the right. Making the change to the left eye is not worth the effort, it would take an eye patch over my right eye and many hundred's of drawing to sight alignment repletion's to retrain the brain and muscle memory to equal the right side.

One of my range buds is Left Eye Dominant, shooting RH.
He uses the "McMillan Tilt"- although he is unaware that is what he's doing. Works well for him, he's a solid shooter.
A true "Gun Guy" (or gal) should have familiarity and a modicum of proficiency with most all firearms platforms.

Another thing you can do is as you cock your hand one way, cock your head a little the other.

I'm cross dominant. Right hand left eye. I just turn my head slightly right to align the left eye. Works well.

I shoot rifles right eye though.
