No kidding, FLASH BANG. I had a 357 J frame 2 inch banger and tossed a few hot 357 loads and wow.

Talk about flash bang, see my test out of a 10 inch SBR: https://www.m4carbine.net/showthread...-Fireball-Ammo

We were testing a bunch of stuff and when we did the same ammo out of an 11.5" with hider, there was only the slightest hint of muzzle flash.

I also like Hornady's 110 Critical Defense standard pressure and +P.
GDHP short barrel is also okay.

When loaded with the genuine Barnes bullet, that load was a bright spot in the Corbon line.

The current product doesn't use the Barnes bullet?

Unknown what is currently being produced or specs. Not knowing what your supply was, I'm just noting historically that it was originally the Barnes, then went through a couple of revisions as they tried producing non-Barnes versions.

    A steel frame snub?

I'd probably go with something 158 gr like the LSWCHP mentioned.

I wouldn't go for anything light (125 gr or less) unless it likely wont expand much or any.

If lower recoil and gun life are high priorities use practice loads. (Wadcutter. Semiwadcutter, LRN, FMJ)

Avoiding shallow penetration is the priority.

I've only seen a handful of 38 Special GSWs over the years. The ones that stood out to me were two suicides done with J-frame 2 inch guns shooting some sort of 158 LSWC-HP. Dont know the brand of ammo and truthfully Im only guessing they were 158 grains because Ive only ever seen LSWC-HP in that weight.

Both showed full penetration and moderate expansion. They didn't get the full mushrooms of gel tests but both approached about .5 inches.

I load either Gold Dots or Buffalo Bore's version of the FBI load in my SP101.

Greg Ellifritz, as usual, as some thought provoking comments.
This picture of testing various hollow points out of a snub is instructional. All credit to Greg.
