That is crazy, but I’m not completely shocked. Some of the biggest a**holes I know are also very “religious”.

This. In my 35 years, I’ve learned there is, on average, zero difference between non-religious and devout religious people when it comes to morals and ethics. If you pay attention to the obit it appears he was spending most of his time in various staff jobs within the church, rarely venturing out to lead a congregation.
Which makes a lot of sense, he acted about the same way middle managers, and field grade officers in staff assignments often act. Like douche bags.
