Yes modern engines have a heavy pilot on the front that will clear most debris or objects.

Throw cows? Yeah, or turn them inside out.

The year I hired out the family day “special” hit a cow outside of Alliance, NE. Keep in mind this is some passenger cars for employees’ families to ride on with a locomotive on either end of the handful of cars, so it can haul ass.

At any rate the description we got of the cow getting hit at 60mph was asshole and guts all over the front of the engine and underneath when what was left got dragged under. The roundhouse guys were not amused.

A few years ago the roundhouse in Springfield, MO found a severed arm rotting away in a crevice on a locomotive. They traced it back to a trespasser who got hit in Montana.

*edit* The dude’s arm ended up falling out on the ground a month later 1700 miles away.

Bonus, a diesel unit on each end means no turning or running-around to reposition the power. New York Central had commissioned an experimental high-speed train that was designed similarly, but the Beancounters spiked CEO Young's second engine that was needed to keep hydraulic pressure up and make the ride tolerable. (The other mistake was going to Baldwin for the prime-movers... shoulda just had GM build a couple hotrodded and cut-down FP9's, or FL9's with the rectifiers replaced by air-compressors.)

If convicted, these two cows should be stretched across the tracks in front of a fast moving freight train, would ensure that they would never repeat their crimes.

Gents, thanks very much for the insight, I do appreciate it.

I know it is old hat for a couple of you, but I think it would be cool as can be to ride upfront in the engine on a railroad trip. Definitely a bucket-list thing.

Something else on the bucket list is the Trans-Canadian trip in the spring or fall in an observation car.

I had an uncle that drove for UP. He hit So Cal regularly and had a few train vs car. Last one involved kids. Retired early, drank to an early grave. I hope that ain't a common industry hazard.

I know of one engineer on NS who had an everybody-got-out-OK train-on-car, and the company doc after the physical told him "you have two choices, either retire from train-crew service NOW, or the next one's a guaranteed fatality because you'll have a heart attack before you even make impact."

SeriousStudent, I've asked around when on commuter runs, but I was told that unlike Back In The Day there's all kinds of Homeland Insecurity BS to arrange a cab-ride and even train crews don't know how to get 'em for their OWN families. Your best chance is probably if a local RR museum has a short excursion train. Failing that, if Commief***ya ever reopens for business and you find your way to Portola, Western Pacific RR Museum there used to have an engineer-for-a-day program, I wanna say 20 years ago it was a thousand bucks for the day.

Come on, I heard from very smart people who are better than us that it's just an idea.

Plus there are right wing extremists who like to meme and wear Hawaiian shirts at the same time! that need to be investigated.

I don't care WHAT creds you have, a house-sized 200-ton SD75I or AC4400CW crashing through the front wall of somebody's house is NOT just an "idea" and anybody who tries to say so needs to be institutionalized IMMEDIATELY as a Danger to Self and Others.

These people are certifiably insane, and they're gonna make it get a hell of a lot worse before it gets better...
