My BIL lost his K9 LEO partner this week....

I figured some of you can sympathize with him. My brother in law is an officer in Little Rock, and has had a K9 partner for most of his career. He’s truly a gentle giant, so caring about actually doing the right thing and making the community a better place. His partner Brix was diagnosed 3 weeks ago with a kidney cancer that progressed extremely rapidly, ending with him having a seizure Tuesday that he didn’t recover from. The choice was made to put him down that night and it’s been incredibly hard on him as well as my sister and their kids. Anyways, just wanted to write this to help cope. I love animals and his K9 partners have been beyond faithful and loyal to him.

Condolences. Haven't had one since the half-Lab half-Doberman I raised from a puppy as a kid... just too painful losing 'em.

He was about almost 5. When my BIL got him as a partner, he was not thrilled with his training and worked with Brix until he was a really good dog. The were really hoping for a little more time with him but this was sudden. It’s his second K9 that has passed from an illness too so he’s really taking it tough. I only met Brix twice and he was a good partner for my BIL. Lots of mutual respect and loyalty between them.

I had 12 years with my patrol K9 Dexter. He was far better backup than any human officer I've worked with, and far more loyal than any human I've known. He saved my ass more times than I can count, including breaking up a spontaneous 1000 person Mexican migrant riot I was 4th officer to respond to, the other 3 officers getting the crap kicked out of them. I was sure they, and I, were going to die. When I put Dexter out on a 9 foot leash, though, he broke the mob mentality, and everyone broke and ran. I never thought one dog could do that. The department was still talking about that 20 years later.

I'm on my 2'nd German Shepherd since, but I haven't had anywhere near the bond I did with my police partner. Always loyal, always alert.

    RIP, Brix.

Please pass on my condolences from a former K9 handler.

“Trust in me, my friend, for I am your comrade. I will protect you with my last breath.

When all others have left you, and the loneliness of the night closes in, I will be at your side.

My eyes are your eyes to watch you and to protect you.

My ears are your ears to hear and detect evil minds in the dark.

My nose is your nose to scent the invader of your domain.

And so you may live, my life is also yours.

Together we will conquer all obstacles, and search out those who might wish to harm others.

It is for you that I will unselfishly give my life, and fill my nights without rest.

Although our days together may be marked by the passing of the seasons,

Know that each day at your side is my reward.

My days are measured by the coming and going of your footsteps.

I am your right arm, the sword at your side, your defender and protector.

I attempt to do what you bid of me. I seek only to please you and remain in your favor.

Together you and I shall experience a bond only others like us will understand

I will listen to you without question, nor will your spoken words ever be repeated.

I will remain ever silent, ever vigilant, always faithful and loyal.

When our time together is done, and you move on in the world,

Remember me with kind thoughts and tales of a time we were unbeatable.

If needed at another time and place, I would gladly take up your fight.

I am a Police working dog, and together we were guardians of the night.”

The loyalty shown by dogs to humans is almost completely unlike anything else in the entire world.

There are stories of dogs who have starved themselves to death because they wouldn't leave the body of their owner and guarded it until their own death.

This is one of the things that makes their passing so painful, powerful bonds can be formed. I don't want to say it's the same as losing your kids, but it's "sorta" like losing your kids.
It's hard to be a ACLU hating, philosophically Libertarian, socially liberal, fiscally conservative, scientifically grounded, agnostic, porn admiring gun owner who believes in self determination.

    Chuck, we miss ya man.

Dogs are Gods perfect example of how "unconditional love" should be.

    Sad for your BIL.
A true "Gun Guy" (or gal) should have familiarity and a modicum of proficiency with most all firearms platforms.
