Sig 552-2

I just picked up my new Sig 552-2 pistol. It's one of 100 recently imported by JDI firearms.




I'll take it to the range and give it a good test firing this weekend. If all is well, I'll e-file a Form 1 to make it an SBR.

That is the only 556 swiss sig I don't have. I have a couple of 553's...so I fought off the urge... But damn that's pretty. Now we just need someone to make magazines.

I bought one of the first 553s to come in years ago. It is my favourite semi auto. Mine is a SBR and I was fortunate to be able to buy a bunch of magazines back when they were cheap. I do wish someone would gear up to make some here. You will will love this weapon Bret.

I already have several a 556 SBR and a 553R SBR, so I know I'll love this one too. I know reputation is that the 552 isn't as durable as the other 55X rifles. They fixed the recoil spring assembly failure point, so we'll see. I do like how the 552 doesn't seem as front heavy as my 553R. I can tell the lower is heavier though. It's interesting that these new ones came with a black barrel and birdcage type flash hider. All of the others I've seen came with gray barrels and prong flash hiders.

I don’t find my 552s to be any lighter up front than my 553. The plastic recoil spring guide rod solved the issues with the two piece steel guide rod. On the latter, the rod screws into the plate and the head of the rod is peened to prevent the two from loosening. In practice, the peening loosens and the two begin to unscrew. The real issue with the 552 is the interface of the piston and carrier. The lug on the piston can become deformed from slight motion during use, causing catastrophic failure of the carrier. This was reported to be the result of bad heat treat. I’ve personally had multiple 552 bolt groups from demilled LE 552s, where upon removal of the piston there is very noticeable deformity of the lug. My 552s became safe queens once I got my 553. The 552 is a neat reference piece. It is a design that wasn’t taken to its best iteration in my opinion. And then there is the non-captive recoil spring and guide rod. It’s a right of passage for the new 552 owner to begin disassembly of the upper and lower, have the spring and rod fly into orbit, hopefully missing the user’s eyeballs, and if you’re lucky they are not too hard to find.

It accepts the b&t Rotex V sound suppressor and blast diffuser. Both also mount to any in-spec M16 flash hider. The Rotex V line is not available commercially in the US for non-LE/gov customers.

It’s a right of passage for the new 552 owner to begin disassembly of the upper and lower, have the spring and rod fly into orbit, hopefully missing the user’s eyeballs, and if you’re lucky they are not too hard to find.

All of that. I'd only add super neato SWAT ONLY markings on the dealer sample SBRs. When I was checking mine over I just opened it up because I've got a bunch of SIGs and I know what the hell I'm doing. Recoil spring almost got me good. It was like taking the stock off of a MP5 and having an AR buffer and spring spill out. I was seriously WTF and it was on that day I understood why I wanted a 553 instead because it was the correct micro SIG.

The only regret I had about selling mine was those awesome import markings and SWAT markings. Probably the closest I'll get to understanding the pure joy of a neckbeard having a punisher skull engraved on the magwell of his AR.

I love the markings on my 552. So cool. Love having a “Commando”.

I shot it today. It ran like a champ. However, it was overgassed (as expected) and ejection was to 1:00. I do wish they offered drill it yourself gas valves.
