Most of the arrivals misinterpreted it as resentful defiance, but Mac got that they were standing watch to protect his entourage against possible "no surrender" suicide-attack fanatics.

No, IIRC Mac didn't even request ANY--that was arranged by the Japanese chain of command; Mac wanted to put on a show by making his way to the Embassy without even a ceremonial honor-guard but both American and Japanese representatives prevailed upon him to reconsider. (Consider, this was a dude who'd waltz out into WWI No Man's Land with no more armament than a riding crop...)
