I didn't want to dump in another post, so...
We are told that patriots recognize the results of an election by the same politicians and media outlets who are doing everything possible to destroy a sitting president.
We are told that patriots honor elections by the same people trying to remove elected members of congress from office.
We are told peaceful protesters are not patriots because a mob decided to storm the capital.
We may truly be screwed as a constitutional republic.

We are told a lot of things. Sometimes the "Patriotic" approach requires group-think; a kind of collective thought process the American left also uses. I take a stance that the United States was founded on the Rights of the Individual, not a collective group.
I choose to be an Individual, with thinking based on my upbringing, personal history and environment. That's the process which allows me to be "Patriotic" without letting anyone else define me. That means within my individuality, I still like President Donald Trump, and I hate Communists.

You cannot exxplain ANYTHING to someone under 30. Just last night at work I tried to explain why the "stimulus money" is a long term bad deal. All I heard back was..quote.."I dont giveafuk 'bout none of dat..I want my check". It maddening.
And Im gonna HAVE to work on letting it go-because its only gonna get worse & worse. To be alive during the fall aint something I thought Id EVER live to see.

Spot on, I agree with most of this, although I don't think the media is responsible for this any more than leftist academia. Leftism is like cancer, treat it if you can, but cut it out to save your life when you must. The media, academia, and our government are infected with leftism. And this has been going on for WAY longer than 50 years.
The way that the swing to the left for the media has accelerated in the past 4 years has been staggering. Their bias is so obvious now that I cannot respect anyone who doesn't see it. Years go, long before 2016, I told people that I felt like choosing what news outlet to use was picking your favorite liar.

Patriotism is kinda like pornography to me. It is hard to define but you know it when you see it. The Left is unpatriotic and un-American and they will destroy this country, obliterate your history and heritage, enslave you, your children and grandchildren. We also need to be on guard about Patriotism. Who are we pledging those ideals to? Would have sucked to have been a dedicated member of the military under Clinton because Clinton hated the military. He frequently showed is blatant disdain for US forces.
And at risk of invoking Godwin, would have really sucked to have been a loyal and patriotic German in 1938. Most people had no idea what the Nazi's would eventually be and when the leadership started down that path at Wannsee they went to great lengths to hide their plans and everything was officially denied. But if you are a patriotic German, now you have thrown in with them and even if you are still alive in 1945 you are from now on a sadistic nazi bastard. Even if all you did was deliver the mail you were a nazi party member if you wanted to move up.
Hell they even put swastika's on church bells, there was no escaping it for the average person. There are even a few churches that apparently are still using them.

When FDR turned away a boat load of jews fleeing Germany during the war would we have to have supported that action to be "patriotic"? In light of what happened to most on the St. Louis I think history would not have been on our side. We remember putting Japanese Americans into internment camps, but nobody wants to talk about the jews we turned away because we didn't want them either. Same President btw, and generally considered "hero" of the DNC.
Not sure if there was a good side regarding our involvement in Vietnam. Drug addicted communist hippies who wanted to tear down the entire country when they weren't spitting on our veterans and calling them baby killers probably weren't the patriots. But given the Diem leadership, and the sad cast of successors who seemed mostly interested in maintaining a Catholic government in a Buddhist populous government probably weren't the good guys either despite the fact that they were fighting commies. Hard to be patriotic when those are your choices.
These days when most people declare their patriotism they mean to the Constitution, the Republic as it should exist or to some other personal ideal of the country that might have never actually existed in practice or existed for only a brief time. But declaring patriotism to an "ideal", especially one that might no exist and won't ever exist is a bit like declaring fealty to Planet X should they ever find it.
Sometimes just being a responsible and normal person gets mistaken for patriotism.
Then there is the servicemember paradox. Are those in uniform always patriots? From a base starting point most should be considered more patriotic than most. But what of an avowed communist at West Point? He's serving his country...doing more than some of us...but more or less patriotic than us? What if they support socialism as a policy rather than a government? Ok or not ok? What if they swear to defend the constitution and even go to war but personally believe nobody should be allowed to own a gun?
Most Americans who aren't active in civil rights (and second amendment issues are absolutely a civil right and must always be presented as a civil right issue) don't even have the first clue what the Constitution even says in many cases let alone how they arrived at those ideas or that the basis for all of it is found in the Federalist Papers.
If they spent an entire day explaining the Constitution in detail to every American, including at the laws that are in opposition or even actual illegal according to the Constitution, the entire country would lose it's shit.
So "patriotism" at best is very subjective to time, place and people.
There were perhaps no people more patriotic in the modern world than those members of the Soviet Union who dutifully occupied and subjugated the populations of Eastern Europe for the motherland.

Good thing it had that pop / synth sound with carefully blended lyrics and crazy new wave imagery or it would have never played on Mtv or radio. I remember making my friends actually listen for the words and it used to blow their damn minds.
Of course we were the generation who were gonna Red Dawn the Russians if they ever got here, were fully prepared to take on cyborgs from the future and all of that. Even if we were overly naive about our capabilities, there was no question of if we were gonna fight...but how we were gonna fight even if we ended up starting as the underdogs.
They talk about propaganda, but early mid 80s it was there and it wasn't communists they were trying to create. As kids The Waltons and Little House was our basic standard of normality, by high school we really thought we might be carrier pilots if we only applied ourselves and drove our motorcycles recklessly. Even the left was in on it to an extent, I know more than a few people who joined the military after too many viewing of "Stripes" and that was Harold Ramis and Bill Murray for god sakes.
But that was just the mentality of the time.
