Historically it's pretty complicated, and I am not even close to being an expert on the subject. Since I'm a biblical Christian, I find it's roots in a rejection of God/Christ. If you, over a long period of time, reject God, that has consequences, whether you believe God exists or not. IMO, leftism/Marxism became a substitute religion for the Jews, and to be fair a lot of gentiles also. The generally negative interaction between those that claimed to be Christian and Jews between the year 0 and 1850's, I think, had an effect on pushing Jews toward Marxism. They saw a new social order on the horizon that had the promise of mitigating their oppression and integrating them more fully into the social order. It didn't work out that way in the USSR. Today I think many Jews, especially in the U.S., see leftism as a tolerant movement that will have the promise to protect them in a Jew hostile world. I don't think they've thought through the history of Marxism as it relates to Jews very well at all. Here's an interesting read on the Jews relationship to the 1917 Russia revolution.

A Christian leftist is an oxymoron. Leftism and Christianity have zero in common. Any person who claims to be a consistent leftist and and a consistent Christian is either a liar or grossly ignorant. Now a Christian can have some things in common with conservatives and libertarians, but they are hardly the same thing.
