Hazing incident? I'm no expert on this, but since when does a SEAL "haze" someone in SF and why? Not a good look for the SOF community.

Wasn't thinking anything else, I simply took what you said and tried to expand on it.

I agree up against the wall and shot. In fact their unit should be the firing squad. This way they remember. I know that is a bit Robert Heinlein, but it would stand out.

Ok the siphoning of cash is not good. But how many times has our govt turned their backs on sof guys and left them hanging in the wind to cover a politicians ass or some brass ass? I get why they had a nest egg. But from what I read, killing the guy, I agree their unit should be the firing squad.

The article mentioned in the .0 mentions that two of the copped to some charges and are serving time (more than a year for one of them, in reference to the other reply) and another one of them is scheduled for trial.

"He is the third servicemember to be sentenced in connection to Melgar’s death. In 2019, Matthews was sentenced to a year in prison. Maxwell was sentenced to four years. Madera-Rodrigues’s trial is to be held in April."

Another link embedded in that story gives a little more details. Unfortunately it is behind a pay-wall and I could only read it behind the gray overlay and the "pay us" dialog.

Speaking secondhand here, but based on info from guys with firsthand knowledge, the SEAL Teams, especially DEVGRU, have an almost outlaw biker gang culture. I remember, when I was in high school, and I mentioned that I wanted to, at the time, become a SEAL, to a SEAL. His response? You and every other wannabe high school tough guy. Keep our f**king name out of your mouth unless by some miracle you earn your Budweiser.

One SEAL discussion I followed on the old Navyseals.com website about 15 years ago warned people not to wear ANYTHING that says SEAL on it, even if it was just fan/support gear. One SEAL bragged about how once, at the gym, he saw a guy with a corny SEAL shirt that said something like "mess with the best, die like the rest". The SEAL asked him if he was with the Teams or if he had a relative in the Teams. The guy said no, he just admired the SEALs and was just showing his support. The SEAL said he then ripped the guy's shirt off, and said if he ever saw the guy wearing anything SEAL related again, he'd kill him. SEAL gear is only for people who earned it. I mean, that's some biker gang shit right there; who would have thought wearing an army surplus store SEAL t-shirt could invoke the same violence from a SEAL that wearing 81 or a Death's Head would from a Hells Angel?

So, it's no wonder that some of the biker gang type crime goes on in the Teams.

Every one that I worked with or met was the exact opposite of both your examples. But hey, assholes exist everywhere.

I would say those are the outliers. A SEAL rip a shirt off? If it was me wearing it I might go in the hospital as a result, be he and I would tangle. I wouldn't be the only one in the hospital.

It is true there is a difference between the 'regular' teams and Dam Neck, but the chasm is much wider in the army between Delta/non-Delta, who almost never have these issues (with which NSW has been plagued). Every unit has douchebags, but most SEALs I knew (I have been out a while, and all the ones I know have retired) and most platoons I have been around, have been pretty good. ST6/DEVGRU as an organization has 'balanced' over the years, but all it takes is one team leader who allows his guys to be cowboys and those guys will make the reputation for the entire team.

The issue isn't the unit per se, but the command climate and leadership that allows it to exist.

I should clarify, I don't believe that every SEAL is like this. I have a friend from high school who is a former SEAL, and he's a quiet, humble, good quality guy. I've met a few other SEALs who were also very good people as well. Most of the ones I know personally would like to rip the tridents off the bad eggs, and would just love for the ones writing the books to knock it the f**k off. But there is that subculture of hard partying, fast living guys in the Teams and clearly, it's a big enough one to have caused numerous problems. Hopefully they can get that problem under control.

Yep and it's something that has to be solved "in house."

Another issue is the voluntary "stolen valor" honor guard who seem to have nothing better to do than youtube guys in bars claiming to be seals because that is their best "pick up chicks" move. It's sad and almost as pathetic as the guys in bars thinking they need to be a "pretend seal" in order to get laid.

It should really only be investigated is somebody is claiming "seal" status to get a job, get elected or otherwise generate revenue of them or their cause. Then, and only then, should they shut down that shit hard.
