Nobody did shit in 1994. They passed a ban that was designed to eliminate an entire class of firearms. It was only ingenuity on the part of manufacturers that led to "ban compliant" versions. For 10 years you couldn't have a flash hider, a collapsible stock that actually functioned or bayonet lugs and people dutifully complied with that nonsense. Even when Janet Reno had a childrens barbeque at Waco nobody did anything...well almost nobody.
A couple "patriots" guided by The Turner Diaries attempted to spark Civil War 2.0 but all they really did was blow up a bunch of people who were lucky enough to secure government jobs and they whacked out a day care in the process. They also managed to be the idiots who made any "militia" group synonymous with "white supremacist" groups because the Turner Diaries were a racist fantasy written by the founder of Aryan Nations.
You literally had people posting their "ban compliant" M4 rifles on the internet with Molon Labe engraved on the receiver. It was pathetic. The only people that might strike out this time, will again be the extremists who we really won't want to identify with and that will set us back 3 or 4 steps from where we began depending upon how many kids they manage to kill inadvertently.
We endured 10 years of that nonsense. The only upside is the rules became so complicated they were virtually unenforceable, builds became popular and as a result the person who used to "buy a gun" instead ended up with an armorers knowledge of AR-15 pattern rifles and a cottage industry of 922r builds via US made receivers on foreign parts kits sprang up which offered low cost AKs, FALs and several other former exotics.
But at the same time, there are still people in "ban states" trying to get along with 10 round blocked magazines and bullet button setups on their home defense rifles. Maybe if that becomes the law of the land nationwide it might be enough to make people do something, but probably they will just come up with some new way to satisfy the letter of the law and make some other neutered version of the rifle we actually wished we could still buy.
We will continue to play word games with ATF with bump stocks, arm braces, binary triggers, etc. and they will allow it until they don't allow it and they will publish some new determination letter and that will be that for the most part. Last time we pushed back hard was arm braces fer gods sake. The only winning move it to specifically target the "sporter clause" within the 1968 GCA, which is what gives them the power to legislate by decree and determination letter, without the need of any congressional approval...but good luck getting most of the people with their Core-15 rifle to fully understand that let alone do anything about it.
Given the fact that what we might be hearing is the death rattle of the NRA, one would think they'd go full tilt "nothing to lose at this point" ILA offensive. But that doesn't seem to be happening either. What I wouldn't give to have another Neal Knox or Aaron Zelman taking point on this issue but they are gone and I don't see capable successors.
It's hard to be a ACLU hating, philosophically Libertarian, socially liberal, fiscally conservative, scientifically grounded, agnostic, porn admiring gun owner who believes in self determination.
Chuck, we miss ya man.
