It turns out that I was incorrect. I tried two different Yugo AK's and they both would eject a loaded cartridge with the safety on. I tried it with a Hungarian AK and it wouldn't. I'm glad I learned something new about AK's today. It makes me wonder why they're not all made that way.

^^^ I agree, that’s part of the genius of the design.

Probably because it's a 1970 design and that allowed them to make improvements to the weapon before adopting it. Wonder if the SLRs or SGLs will do that.
It's hard to be a ACLU hating, philosophically Libertarian, socially liberal, fiscally conservative, scientifically grounded, agnostic, porn admiring gun owner who believes in self determination.

I assumed not but have one of each and just checked. Nope.

The SLR-104 is basically a 1980s pattern AKS-74 type rifle (As opposed to the later AK-74M). And the SGL is based off the 1990s era “100 series” AKs.

But look how long it took the Russians just to make something as simple as tabbed safety levers standard on a rifle intended for general-issue. Like almost two decades after it became popular on the US civilian market...

Yeah, I have both in the safe and I never checked either. Honestly it's a feature I'd probably never need / use. The Russians are probably better off not making dramatic changes, they'd just end up making a piston AR-15 if they did. I sorta appreciate the cautious conservatism of refinements to that series.

It's better than having a Tapco raped version this year, an all new Magpul version next year and a SCAR AK series the following year.

Had a couple Yugos I snagged during the $599 period. Sold them when prices got really stupid and don't necessarily miss them. I only wish the Tantals turned out the be the perfect platform they seemed they could be.
