One of the best selling points for me was the false economy of the Chinese units, when it comes to battery life. You can pay the same amount for four years worth of batteries and a cheap counterfeit, as you would for four batteries and a real Aimpoint.

    Buy once, cry once.

Hefeone, I remember being a Lance Coolie with no money. And the conclusion I came to was, that I could not afford to piss away what little money I had. So I stayed out of the bars in Oceanside and Kinville for two extra months, and bought quality gear.

Not talking down to you, or talking smack. I have been where you are. Look around here for used gear, and people will hook you up.

This is a good deal on a great pair:

Grant and his wife are both veterans, and will not do you wrong. I have bought a bunch of my gear from him. They are solid folks, and so is LtCol Blish.

There is a great video on the web of him HURLING Aimpoints all the way across a range and back, then firing with no loss of zero. The dang things have been run over by cars and hit by rounds.

    Stay safe, and good luck!

Don't buy into the hype. I would order something from optics planet and if you don't like it, send it back during the trial period and exchange it for something else. You can't go wrong doing it that way.
The bitterness of poor quality lingers long after the sweetness of low price is forgotten....

Best bang for your buck for a ubiquitous M4 scope imo, would be a Nightforce 1X4X24 FC 2 reticle.

This is the best "bang for the buck" in optics currently available. In fact, it's probably all the optic that 99% of AR owners really need.

I put my money where my mouth is. Here's the one I bought mounted on my BCM upper project.

What do you want out of it?
    What is your use?
What game do you compete in, and is success in that particular game more important than the overall combat efficiency of the system (be honest, there is nothing wrong with being competative- to a degree)?
    What is you price constraint?
What have you used before that you like?
    Why?
    Don't like?
    Why?

Answering these and preempting others will help us in helping you.
There are a lot of optics that do similar things at drastically different price points and service life expectations, just as there are optics that do wildly different things at similar price points.

Cheaper sure, but many of us would argue your opinion about them being best value.

With the greatest respect for our troops and LEO's, I think you are comparing apples and oranges. I would imagine that the poster isn't suggesting that those aforementioned people would put anything less than battle proven equipment on their equipment. For example, if I were to use a vehicle in the sandbox I'd want a Humvee not a KIA 4x4. However, if I want to do a little 4x4ing on the weekend I don't need a Hummer and I may look at the KIA. I see by your screen name that you are a industry professional, many here are not professionals, the AR is one complement in our collection. I was pricing the red dot/magnifiers for example and the magnifier ALONE runs $650. That's close to the price - in fact within $10 of the price I paid for the AR-15 I purchased. Personally I'm not trying to imitate a warrior, I like the red dot and with my old eyes I need a little magnification.

I think the question always has to be asked: "Best value for what use?"

What's better, one Aimpoint C3 in mount for $450 or twice the cost in the piece of crap SPOTs that you have to buy over and over again?

I have yet to see a SPOT make it past the zeroing phase of a rifle class or a single stage at a match, so maybe I just lack the experience with them I should have.

There is a difference in buying inexpensive quality gear, like the C3, and buying a piece of crap simply because it's cheap. No, not everyone needs a $800 Aimpoint M4s in a Larue mount, but everyone should at least want a functional optic and mount. I would think.
